FWIW I think it is some sort of lifting mechanism for a hot glass surround to an old lamp of some kind.

If someone has the ability, you can upload the image to google image search and it will match the item and bring back web links etc.

No one noticed the little ghost with the face in the wood grain of OP's photo? Just above whatever the hell that thing is.

Is it not something to do with sewing/seamstressing/tailoring?


Use it to hold a bunch of different threads together which you can then release all at once when you have finished making whatever it is you are making?

Otherwise, I'll go with the "its used to pick up something hot" description given earlier
