A fire at the Fox film vault in the 1930s destroyed a huge quantity of silent ilms which (along with other fires) is why we do not have many examples today.
The film they used was so volatile it could burn underwater.
Volatility is a measure of how readily a substance (usually a liquid) evaporates. I'm fairly sure celluloid didn't evaporate. The film they used was so volatile it could burn underwater.

Even more surprising is that there were only 11 years between the first powered flight and the fighter planes of WWI and less than 50 years between the Wright brothers sussing out how to do powered flight and Chuck Yeager breaking the speed of sound in level flight AND only 78 years from the wright brothers to the space shuttle. There were people alive whose life spanned no manned powered flight and man setting foot on the moon.
