Bath could be nice! Any suggestions for decent hotels which have parking, i understand Bath is not very car friendly so you have to walk or bus everywhere?
Slap bang in the centre, valet parking

5 minutes walk from the centre, parking outside the front door:

At 335 and 795 quid respectively, I think I'll give that a miss lol.

If it helps we would be leaving around 5-6pm on Sunday so would hopefully miss the bulk of traffic.

Arundel looks like a good place as well. I think the problem here is hotels as most places seem expensive because it's a bank holiday. Robbing bds :-)

I don't think a motorsport weekend would go down too well..

That much is obvious.
Good luck finding anywhere decent to stay at this late hour rofl
The best thing to do with any BH is stay at home, two reasons:

It will rain and be cold.
The World and his wife will try to go everywhere.

If you enjoy queuing for absolutely everything in the rain from the second you leave go for it. thumbup

The trick is to go away the weekend before or after any BH.

There are always scare stories from the daily mail etc about traffic on a bank holiday but it never seems to materailise.

There are a lot less cars on the road over a holiday period than normal and i've found it's just a matter of planning your trip.

Never had an issue with traffic at all.

A lot less cars???
Maybe that's because of the bloody caravans which are clogging up all the roads?

And if you've never had an issue with bank holiday traffic, you must live on Sark. rolleyes

I remember once leaving Brands Hatch after the racing had finished about 5pm on a bank holiday, and getting onto the MI just north of London just after midnight. Bank Holiday traffic only caused a slight 5.5 hour delay over the normal journey time! frown

Absolutely. There are a lot less cars on the road on a Bank Holiday than a normal work day and a lot of the cars have multiple occupants.

Getting stuck in a Bank holiday jam is for mugs. Plan your journey and it just won't be an issue.

South Devon on a BH week? fking grockles!

Bath is where you want. st loads to do, some excellent restaurants and rammed to the eyeballs with proper people.
Wow that takes me back 30 odd years, I have not heard the word grockles since on holiday in Cornwall and my Dad making use of it :-)

We did Cheltenham and that was nice.

We looked at a weekend away for the BH. Leaving it late like we always do sort of limits your options.
The lake District was 98% booked according to the website!
However, Bristol was only 48% and there was some fantastic deals, £180-250 for two for a two-night stay. And Bristol is the best place I've been to recently. Smoke & Mirrors bar/comedy club is highly recommended! laugh

Bath is easy enough on foot, unless you want to head out of the city?

How about the train to Bath, it's at the bottom of town and well within walking distance of all the main hotels, or a short taxi ride.

Get yourself into the pump rooms for tea and Bath buns with cinnamon butter lick

If you want to stay in a hotel I would recommend getting one in Bristol and taking the train into Bath as the hotel prices in Bath were noticeably higher.

The problem with getting the train is it would be about £30 each for us which adds a pretty high percentage to the price.

We use this quite a bit, some good bargains to be found (and some overpriced way out of our range stuff too)

https://www.mrandmrssmith.com/search/august-bank-h...

With Bath, there's actually a decent enough Travelodge that's a short walk from the town centre and Spa, it's the Waterside and it's quite a nice walk. If you're OK with saving a bit on the accomodation to spend a bit more in town, it's quite nice. We did Stonehenge the next day

There is good weather forecast for the bank holiday weekend, I'd suggest that the beaches and the roads generally leading in their direction will be horridly busy Friday evening and Saturday. Worst still coming back the other direction.

Also accommodation might be in short supply.

Heading down to the north Cornwall coast on saturday morning, from southern Derbyshire....

Was planning on setting off at 5am. Might make it 4am after reading this thread. Why do we do it to ourselves?

Getting past Brissle can be bloody murder sometimes frown

Not really. South is MUCH MUCH nicer. I enjoyed the south coast last weekend, Bournemouth a particular highlight.

Looking at taking the mrs away for a night over the bank holiday. Basically we want somewhere nice on Sunday and then something to do on the monday.

Location wise, within 150 miles / 3 hours of Newbury.
Activity wise, anything, we like musueums, activities like mazes, big old castles etc. We went to beaulie last weekend and had a great time for example.

Need some help as ive not had to do something like this for ages hah.

Cost wise about 150 including the dats activity at the top end, nice hotel or b&b?

Any suggestions?
Well how did it go then?

Weather wasn't so bad afterall, well near me it bashed it down Sat aft, dull Sunday, sunshine all day on Monday.
I went nowhere, the travel news and Mayos phone in on Sunday afternoon told me all I needed to know about the traffic....

We have booked next Sunday / Monday in a hotel in the New Forest. Hoping for some nice weather.

We could not get hotels for love nor money. The reason we are staying away next weekend was because we thought we found a place this weekend but the stupid booking system (which I selected for this weekend) defaulted to next weekend and it wasn't until we paid for the non refundable booking that the text confirmation said.

This weekend we had a quiet night on Sunday and went down to Milford on Sea on the Monday, traffic wasn't bad really and had a lovely ice cream and walk along the beach smile

I did exactly the same thing last year except I never noticed. rolleyes We turned up at the place only to be told it was booked for the weekend after! Felt like a right prick I can tell you. We drove and rang around for hours before finding a cancellation at the last place we were going to try which luckily turned out to be great.

We then had to go back again the following weekend and take a day off work to make use of the original booking. hehe

Me and the Mrs like York, you will need to jump on train obviously, royal York hotel is bolted on to the station and walking distance to York centre. Fill your boots with the history lark and restaurants.
