My only full lap of the M25 was in 1988. I had to go to Essex and came back by carrying on round the same way. At the time I was doing some freelance modelmaking and I'd made a representation of a computer game for a photographer for a magazine cover. He was chuffed with the model and was full of how it was the beginning of a great business relationship and he could foresee us doing all sorts of things together. He went on at such length about our future cooperation he walked out to the car with me. Unfortunately, with the Range Rover and XJS being a bit juicy, I had taken my rather dilapidated 1963 Austin 1100. It had belonged my Great Uncle Jack and my mother had asked me to, "Fetch it, say nice things about it, pay him what he asks and drive it to the breakers." I paid fifty quid for a one owner, low mileage, well maintained car so obviously I used it for three years until it refused to pass an MoT. The photographer took one look and his whole demeanour changed. He bid me farewell and I never heard from him again.
I was replacing panels in those when they were 6 years old. Happy days.

It was rust what got it in the end. The estimate was £400 to get it through the MoT. I was sad to see it go. It was great; it had radial tyres, disc brakes and front wheel drive, a heater and a stereo. Everything functioned except the interior light. Many a happy hour was spent making the light work only for it to pack up almost immediately. I drove to the breakers, drove on to the weighbridge, accepted the £20 or whatever it was I was offered and drove round to see the bloke with the grab who would crush the roof as he lifted the car onto the pile. As I got out for the last time the interior came on. I could have wept.

All this time I've been saying to people how marvellous it was that the Austin 1100 had front discs as standard in 1963.

If anyone needs me I shall be in the library.

I may be wrong on the 1300GT. It's been known

1990 was the last time I was wrong I believe. When I got married.

I was due to be married in 1990. She told me 'It's either me or the car'.

I sold it later for £7500. I still wish I'd kept the Cosworth now.

The clunk was V6 falling back on to his bunk. I should add that the bunks in the guest dormitory are all of the three plank variety specifically designed to discourage this sort of tardy behaviour. Some redesign is required. Bunks of half inch steel plate, do you think?

This morning I shall mostly be fitting some LED lamps in the granddaughter's dolls house.

.

By the way chaps, the Austin 1100 did have front disc brakes. One of the first mass produced cars to have them apparently.

If you're sure - well that's news to me well done Dicky. I know Austin were the first to do 5 speed gearboxes as standard but we can now add the disc brakes to the spearhead of their technology that made Britain at the forefront before going bust.
