Flew over a vast swathe of Canada on Thursday (Hudson Bay down to SFO). The depth of cold was clear from 37000 feet. It was quite staggering.

First time I flew to the US was a similar route and similar time of year. Hours and hours of whiteness. I'd never seen anything like it.

Not looking good for the UK and the rest of the winter is it, the only positive is that the outlook has been pretty wrong so far, maybe now it'll be wrong the right way!

I'll give you another positive, it's been better than the last 2 winters - and that's really saying something!

Remember that period around xmas when it was dull for weeks down south and the north enjoyed sun.

Near Benidorm...

All the people at work (Gibraltar) were on about all this this morning - even the beaches in Fuengirola and Puerto Banus had snow!

Great isn't it? Here in the UK we get warm, wet, dank and st all year. There they get 30C + summer AND snow.

Dec 2010 was the second coldest in the entire 360 year CET by 0.1C, one of only half a dozen ever with a negative CET.

There were at least 3 very snowy winters out of nowhere in the 80's, 2 were also very cold, one exceptionally so - you have to remember that by the end of the 70s we were all resigned to the endless regime of warm snowless winters.

You can never tell what will happen from one year to the next, but warm and wet is a NORMAL English winter, always has been and always will be (modern times anyway), that's why we enjoy the exceptional snowy cold years so much.
