After reading this post ,though I know NRS is way up north Norway ,I looked in my big old atlas
and realised that all of Iceland is south of the Artic circle.......

I never realised how far north I am in some ways until comparing it to Iceland. Iceland is only approximately 1/2 the distance to Scotland for me in terms of latitude. Still no polar bears though, and realised that all of Iceland is south of the Artic circle.......
As you were.

Might knock on your door later in the year NRS, sister and Mum want to see the Northern lights and whales and at the moment a road trip from the UK to your neck of the woods is looking favourite!Puggit said:

No problem (although I might move soon-ish - not sure yet though)! Andenes (in Vesterålen) and Tromsø are where a lot of the whale watching trips go from. When were you thinking? Generally the orcas, humpbacks and fin whales come between November to February. However it's a bit awkward in some ways in that in comes at a similar time to the "mørketida" (no sun for a month or two). In the darkest time you'd have around 2 hours twilight. January is probably best to balance the light and best time for whales. Late January is probably the best time of year for light in general here when sunny - absolutely stunning with pinks/orange from the low sun, into bright gold from sun against white snow and blue sky later in the day, to orange and pastel pink in the "evening" and then the "blue hour" once the sun sets.Alternatively from Andenes in the summer you go a lot further out and see sperm whales - but they more just pop up and then go down from what I understand. And due to the midnight sun there is no darkness to see aurora.
Northern lights can start from August in very strong displays, but November onwards is best. I am not sure if it is just me seeing them, but before Christmas seems to be a lot better in the time that I have been here to see good displays.
If you get the very best displays this is what they look like in real time (starts getting good from around 40 seconds in):

(When it does this I probably sound like that "double rainbow" guy from a few years back, thankfully no one has filmed at the time ).
