Was cold enough to start freezing some of the lakes and leave a heavy frost throughout the day. It was interesting cycling on a road racing bike with skinny tyres... had a few drifting moments coming down some of the hills, and also had the back end moving around/ wheel spin when going up the hills!

One of my co workers has a Rayburn.

Yesterday she put something it that shouldn't have been on it, it went on fire and the fire brigade had to come out.
Her house now has lots of smoke damage and water damage from when the fire brigade turned up.

So to all you who own these things and that break down religiously every time it gets chilly.

You need to let yours know of the one that helped burn down its house to make them work better.

4 degrees for the school run this morning: fuel-burning heater in the Discovery came on for the first time this season. No hint of a frost, though.

Yep, 4c here in Cheshire, coldest so far, fairly miserable ride in as had fairly thin gloves on, fantastic hot shower when I arrived though.

After a relatively mild weekend, dominated by weather from the SW (wet and mild...) then it looks like high pressure returns next week.

There is ample evidence of a continued blocking of the Atlantic long term. Sadly it's far too early in the season for it to mean much. But if this pattern sticks around, anything is possible this winter.

I name this thread officially open! First snowfall of the winter tonight, on the highest mountains in Scotland wink

Meanwhile, after a low-pressure weekend, high pressure blocking returns to Scandinavia. It will remain pleasant but cool. Clouds and showers off the North Sea always possible.

Interesting that this weather pattern is preventing the polar vortex cranking up - and that helps prevent the jet stream from speeding up too. Autumnal feel, without the rain! The trees will be looking magnificent soon.

Psht, the world isn't just the UK, wink Lots of snow pictures already posted (well, at least one, wink).

How long are they predicting the high pressure system to remain over Scandinavia? I've been skiing every month this year and the plan was to ski at the end of october on new snow, but looks like there might be issues due to a lack of snow! It's below 0C, just no predipitation to ski on, frown

It looks and feels more like autumn should; the leaves haven't been blown off by any storms - and so are showing their fabulous colours.

Have started looking on the Netweather threads, which are quite interesting & informative.

It takes more than the lack of storms to see the best colours - long dry spells are the key, I believe.

We try and ignore the showoffs wink

There's not much end in sight for this pattern. Once they settle in like this, high pressure systems are difficult to get rid of. The good news (for the UK!) is that this spell is helping Europe cool down. More snow cover and cooler temps can only help us if we can tap in to it later on during winter.

Ha ha! Jimmy hasn't started yet, so not quite there with the regular show-offs, wink

Yes, that's what I was worried about! It's great for creating a proper hard base for the ski season, but not helpful when you have 13 days left to try and find something to ski on! September was very sketchy as it was - skiing on blue ice on a glacier with an ice axe, laugh

We moan about the weather a lot in this country but the last few weeks have been glorious, just as we descend into the normal 5c and drizzle murk until March.

I have resolved to cycle all through the winter again this year, unless there is ice on the road, which is daft to ride in.

Orlando for the nosey ones. NHC giving a 60% chance of a tropical cyclone forming around the Bahamas in next 5 days. <gulp>

No tropical cyclone here, and the temp plummeted to 22oC yesterday frown

Interesting signs for early Nov. Even the Met Office are warning of a direct northerly blast in first week of Nov. Cold for everyone, snow up North?
