The actual outcome?

Come Saturday, the Police did show up, but only to close the road completely to let them race (complete with DAYLs hanging out of the back of transits while weaving all over the road filming the racing between a multitude of screaming ?keys) and providing escorts for employees, tankers, etc, (to a barrage of abuse, bottles, etc) between races when the 'organisers' gave their permission!

Apparently, it was deemed a risk to public safety to enforce the order... and the Top Brass dislocated several shoulders patting themselves on the back.

Same story on the Sunday, but the Police put extra resources into it - by deploying six units on a nearby overpass on the A13 with speed cameras for Joe Public! rolleyes

The next day, after the event had finished and the DAYLs had moved on, the Council added more salt to the wound by requesting for the community to gather on the Manorway and undertake a litter pick... to assist the grinning Councillors who were in no way there just for a photo opportunity.

Throughout the whole week preceding the event the number of burglaries, shoplifting and general antisocial behavior in the area went through the roof (to the point that the whole town centre (pubs, takeways, etc) shut down at 5pm on the Saturday to avoid a riot).

I so look forward to a bigger and better event next year when the Travellers remember what a pushover how accomodating we all were...

sounds about right

Friend of a friend was held up when these noble nomads blocked off the A127 recently. Police presence there watching… said bloke was in a hurry and mentioned to one of the coppers that he’d like to reverse up the slip-road to get out of the mess. The response was depressingly predictable “…you do that and I’ll arrest you…”

And then the police wonder why public confidence in them is falling…

hmmm
roflroflrofl

Tell that to the residents of Cray’s Hill – 30 years ago a relatively desirable place to live with a good school, then Dale Farm happened. Now…. Errrm let’s just say that it’s no longer desirable and for one reason only. Shall I ask for guesses as to why that might be?

Like other forms of vermin they need moving on. We have them walking into the industrial units regularly in the summer if the shutters are up or just taking pallets etc. No end of problems with them in leaving carnage in fields, stealing from everywhere and a rise in problems wherever they go. They're just leaches that offer nothing to society IMO.
You don't move vermin on, you eliminate them. I'm Irish so that isn't even racist. So there :P
The problem is the Irish didn't eliminate them - they moved them on!
Which begs the question “WTF don’t we move them on too????”

Is there anyone from the travelling community who has been successful and gone on to live a mainstream life? This would mean having, I presume, a good education in a supportive environment. Alternatively is there a 'race' that's been more self destructive and backward in its outlook, generating continual problems and with a wish to continue being in the 1850's than the travelling community?

The wife was an assistant manager at a nursery and they had traveller kids there, the parents lived in a house were from a traveller background but they wanted their kids to be mainstream, have an education, a job etc.

Back in the 90's we had a bunch of them turn up and park in our yard in the middle of the day - I used to run a transport company with warehouse / yard etc. - The yard was fairly empty at the time because all the vehicles were out, so they saw it as fair game.

We were simply running a business and this lot appeared out of nowhere.

Needless to say we called the police, but they came and were basically useless. We warned them that at 6pm everyone would be going home and the gates to the yard would be locked. Amazingly the police advised us that we weren't allowed to lock the yard because we had to provide access for fire appliances should there be a fire in one of their caravans! - I told the police that the gates were going to be locked whether they liked it or not, and if they wanted to 'minimise the risk' then they'd better get them out of the yard before 6pm.

They didn't.

We locked up, and the last job before leaving was to release King, our friendly German shepherd who lived in an enclosure in the yard for the safety of our staff (only a few of them could handle him). He was an RAF reject - kicked of of the dog training unit for being un-trainable. Needless to say after one night cowering in their vans the travellers moved on as soon as we opened up the following morning smile

Couple of months ago we were renting a warehouse on Fradley Park.

We were slowly ramping down our operation & emptying the place of most stuff - left a few office desks, few bits and bobs, some IT infrastructure etc but nothing major.

The 2nd night after we'd moved out (not terminated lease due to future plans) they turned up, intimidated the security guard on duty - cut the chain & padlock from the main gate, let them selves in and chained it back up.

Proceeded to break in, strip the place of anything of value - primarily cabling & the like plus the CCTV system.

And stayed there.

Police called, who did nothing - 'not worth the bother'

Eventually some strings were pulled at a higher level via the company and the police encouraged them to move on.... no charges or punishment.

Isn't this the sort of approach that's needed if anyone is to remove them quickly and successfully - identify what it is that they really don't like (apart from farmer's slurry etc) - dogs must be a good one, aren't they also very superstitious ?. What else do they really dislike ?

recently we've had to also put up with black awareness month and LGBT fortnight. FFS

this involved a bloke in a dress and a women dressed as a bloke, sat in the canteen all lunchtime in case anyone wanted to ask them a question.

also varying fat middle aged blokes in mirrored sunglasses, glitter wigs and t-shirts saying "I'm gay, get over it". I don't even know who they were,
You had lunch with some council workers?

does being gay mean that you have to dress like a tt or embrace stereotypes then?

It shouldn't, and doesn't for most, but some people do seem to revel in it.

I and my colleagues have literally no idea what these people were trying to achieve.

Mainly we were thinking, feck off and prance around somewhere else with yr strange protest, with yourselves. why protray some 1970's outdated image ?

still if it made them feel worthwhile, maybe it was a good day out from the secure mental health section they must have come from.

Seems odd to me as well. In the 1970's Gay Pride would have made sense since a lot of people still wouldn't accept it as a way of life. Now the majority of the population couldn't care less if someone is gay or not, so not sure of the need to shove it in people's faces

It's probably for the benefit of those dressing up. A wierdo self indulgence thing like The Sealed Knot or Living History groups.

As a gayer myself I have to be honest that the particular Stonewall campaign you're referring to is, I think, one of the most offensive campaigns I've ever seen. I absolutely hate it and silently curse every time I see one of the "Get over it" posters. I fking hate them.

On behalf of the overwhelming majority of normal gays, I do apologise (and I'm not even being sarcastic lol)
