Unsure if that's the same camp, but there was a raid a few years ago in Leighton Buzzard on a camp with alleged slavery going on.
I used to sell cars and had dealings with that lot. I didn't want to deal with them, but the sales manager was frightened the showroom would get done in, or he would, so I had to deal with them, and their intimidation tactics, what a joy.
They were liars, and cheats, but I got on with them ok as they knew I knew they were at it, so we had a laugh.
Anyhoo, when those camps were raided, guess who I saw on the news, yep, my car buyers. Never would think people could be so cruel, however, it seems they were.
About half a dozen vans arrived by the river last week. Expected some hassles as they, or brother chip, have been on council land for a year. Off in 72 hours, reason being that to get onto the land they had to do criminal damage, basically hacking a lock off, so on your bike time rapido. Also off the local park in 24 hours, same reason.
Well done Tesco for acting, though not so sure about the handiwork of your contractors putting up barriers concreted into the ground. You've managed to stick one into the ground and weld it to a pedestrian kissing style gate on a public footpath. Oops.

So here's the thing. How is it that these people can carry on the lifestyle of their choice, which by just about every account includes constant, daily, law-breaking, and they never get touched for it? This really is a genuine question. Oh, I know one of you will come back with statistics that prove that one of them was once taken to court twenty years ago and fined 20p for stealing a grape from Tescos, but you know what I'm really getting at. Criminal damage, trespass, ruining the environment, threatening and intimidating people, killing animals, pollution, the theft of anything not bolted down - basically just proving the DAYL moniker, and nobody, nobody ever pulls them over it.
Even if they have managed to blag an "ethnic minority" badge (and we all know that's just another sham and con, they stole that from the genuine romanies), that doesn't give them carte blanche to just rip whatever they like from normal society.
Ancient 1970s videos notwithstanding, this does seem to be getting out of hand now. It used to be that you'd get a few turn up every several years or so, now they rock up mob-handed every other month.
A couple of the ones who were evicted from our village last week moved 1/4 of a mile to a little patch of land nearby. At the weekend, they disappeared, as did an expensive trailered piece of groundworking plant from a site a few hundred yards away. Funny old world.

Because they are all at it. I spoke to a dog trainer/breeder. He said they would steal dogs, then turn up the next day saying they had bought it in a pub and did they wan to buy it back.
On one occasion there was cctv of a van turning up to steal dogs, but the van was apparently insured for a number of people to drive it, so the police couldnt prove who had done it. I guess their whole community pulls together to deny guilt.
Add to that the fact they are well represented legally, and know how to play the system.

I agree that it's an issue. I think I'm right in saying that if the travellers were generally hippy types, who didn't cause trouble and just wanted to camp for a while, people would be more tolerant. I don't know how the government would solve the problem. A lot go back to Ireland for holidays each year, perhaps remove their passports and prevent access to the UK? Surely legal issues around this though...
Local radio phone in about this, there was a dare going round the office about phoning in, giving the producer some right old politically correct clap trap that was supposed to be your point, this, as it was the BBC, would maximise chance of getting on live.

I can't believe, and seriously hope, that's untrue. Otherwise we're just opening the door to anarchy, every time a group of people are prepared to tell the authorities to stick it, and maybe wave a few big sticks around, they can carry on with whatever they want to do?
There has to be an answer to this. If the consensus is that it's getting worse, that's a very slippery slope if not checked.
I've never written to "my MP" before but I'm starting to consider it.

Was out on a test drive in a new car on Saturday. Went past a field that was spewing smoke out everywhere. As we got further on and the smoke cleared, I noticed the field was full of piles of rubble, waste, dumped electrical goods, sofas etc.
I asked the salesman what was going on. He said there were travellers living there and they were probably burning something, again. He said they had been there ages and the council and the police weren't interested in moving them on.
Fortunately, his dealership hasn't had any issues with them. One dealership near them gets regular visits though. Apparently, the travellers demand money or the property gets damaged.
