Afternoon,

Never done this trip before and there are lots of options for stops, I preferably want one stop only. Has anyone does this trip?

Has anyone booked a flight direct to say Beijing and then booked a separate flight to Hongqiao?

Or does anyone have any websites who specialise in this type of flight or that you can recommend - usually use skyscanner/expedia type.

How easy is it to get a across Shanghai - ie fly to Pudong airport instead

Thanks,

Planet Claire

Are you just wanting to get to Shanghai, or are you specifically wanting to fly into Hongqiao? I think Pudong is the main airport from the UK (it's the one I've flown into) and if you fly into there you can get into town by Maglev (although you'll have to change onto the Metro to continue your journey).

Hongqiao is closer to the exhibition centre, so I was looking into that one. It does look like pudong is the main one.

Easy to get around?

I wouldn't stress on the airport too much, it's pretty simple to get from Pudong to the exhibition centre (NCEC?), a taxi will probably be easiest if you have luggage, they are stupidly cheap - £20 each way or something. Ask for a receipt at the beginning of the journey.

Took about 90 minutes, the last bits were slow because our taxi driver kept falling asleep on the motorway while driving.

Otherwise, fastest would be maglev to Longyang Road followed by line 2 subway direct to Xujing East, you could stop off in Shanghai centre if you have time.

Are you exhibiting? The exhibition centre is MASSIVE.

I travel into Shanghai around 3 times a year, and have tried a few of the routes. I generally fly into Pudong, as it is closer to my office, but have also travelled from Hongqiao a fair bit. My preferred option is Emirates via Dubai - they tend to be reasonably priced (book right and you can get a business return for under £2k including chauffeur at each end), and their service is great... little bits like the bar on the A380 make things even more pleasant. For me it is also handy as I can go from either Birmingham or Manchester, which saves heading to Heathrow. As I am now gold on emirates, a return flight in business now means that I can use miles to upgrade a leg to first each time - their first class service is truly outstanding!

I have done BA direct a few times, but it tends to be a lot more expensive unless you catch a deal (generally closer to £4k, offers might be £2500), but is a lot shorter - traded off by the longer airport run. Service on board is good, but generally not quite as nice as emirates (some of the aircaft looking tired, but the newer ones being pretty good).

A left-field option I have done that sits between the two is Finnair via Helsinki, who tend to be reasonably priced, and look after you pretty well - and the door-to-door time is similar to flying from LHR as you can fly BHX/MAN via Helsinki the more direct northern route, so you don't lose out on time by having to transfer...

I hope this helps a bit!

Great thanks, this is the kind of info I was hoping to get...won't be flying business sadly, and I think Pudong will be ok. There are many stop options too, have you done Turkish airlines and stop in Istanbul before by any chance? The flights are about £500 return!

Glad I could be helpful! I am quite lucky in that work will pay for business on long-haul, but it is quite an additional cost over economy. I haven't tried Turkish airlines, but they certainly seem to be pushing hard on marketing at the moment so could be worth a go - it cost about the same as that for me to do a quick trip (economy) to Sweden this week! If you do go for it, post an update as to how you get on - it could be a route I will try in the future.
