No idea if there was a thread on here over the summer about West Mids Police's initiative to tackle drivers who close pass cyclists - but it appears to be bearing fruit, with nearly 80 prosecutions in a month and other forces taking a close interest.

I think the point he is trying to make is that cyclists coming up behind cars with just cm's between them is creating a situation that is just as dangerous to that cyclist. Its a double standard.
When you walk through a car park, or along a crowded pavement, how close are you willing to get to the parked cars?If you were walking on a country road, is that how close you would be comfortable with cars passing you at speed?

I'm sorry but if I can pass a cyclist with a bit of gap and not knock them off then it's a safe pass in my books.
I'm a cyclist, but I ride off-road as I don't feel safe on the road (plus it's more fun!). Why must the majority pander to the needs of the few all the time?

Depends what you mean with 'a bit of a gap'. Bearing in mind that a cyclist might have to swerve around a pot hole ect..I'm sorry but if I can pass a cyclist with a bit of gap and not knock them off then it's a safe pass in my books.

Equally, cyclists use the roads too- if you don't like that fact then best not to drive on them.
For me, I can deal with the odd close pass, its basically though a combination of proximity, the type of vehicle, but also speed is a big component, I was overtaken at probably 90/100 mph by an Audi A5 racing a Fabia VRS, car coming the other way, they were so committed they couldnt slow down, that is the worst I have ever had, I was shaking and I was hoping I would encounter them so I could make my disgust for their driving known.
I had a guy in a Merc overtake me through some roadworks, it wasnt that wide and there was a massive long trench in the road to my left so I tried to keep to the middle of the coned bit and he forced his way through anyway whilst holding his hand on the horn to make his point, he nearly pushed me into the barrier and possibly if that had happened, the trench, he got through the roadworks and then realised his mistake as he joined a massive queue of traffic, funnily enough he didnt want to discuss it, and thats the point, he barged through, too close and then sat behind a load of other cars and me trying to not get pushed into a trench was the main delay on his journey, he did look very worried, hopefully next time he may consider whether that 3 seconds he had to gain was worth it.
Most drivers are fine, some are actually a bit over courteous and cautious.

So if two militant lycra clad goons cycle abreast does that mean if I pass them as I would any car I will be done for not giving the offside goon 1.5 metre of space?
Imagine there was another cyclist in the middle in this picture, how is the car supposed to give both of them 1.5 metre safe space without mounting the kerb.
