Hi all,
I've been thinking of a new car ahead of next years ved changes and I'm tempted with a 535d m-sport touring. I'm just after some opinions on whether or not this is good idea in view of the new 5 coming out next year.

Should I wait or go for the sort of tempting deal I could get on a last production run? (circa 25-30% off)
I understand there'll only be a 530d engine in the G30 is that right?

I test drove the 530d m-sport (saloon) and I'm wondering what the main difference is with the 35d engine, I found the 530d had a wee bit of initial lag before taking off.

I suppose my main issue is the design is now 6 years old today, I nearly bought a 520d SE in 2011 before plumping for my A4 Avant so while it'll be a new car in might not feel that much of a step forward.

What does the PH collective think?

Rich.

530D is single turbo, 535d twin...I found the 30d the turbo was working far harder. The new B series engine will give 261 bhp in the 530 I believe the figures to be.

It depends in real terms the new 5 will have more technical developments self driving, remote view etc., it will be lighter and more efficient. You will also get the new modular B series engine instead of the N57. It depends whether you "want" or "need" that.

I still think the f10 is a good car overall despite it's age. About the only true reason I would go for the new 5 next year would be the B series engine and it being lighter, some of the gadget stuff I find "nice to have", but I do not think a well specced current F10 is a compromise!

I would check whether the current F10 will get the updated idrive (I have seen some 6 series with the new idrive), but I am not sure with the F10 being a runout model if this will happen.

Just done exactly the same and ended up getting an F11 535d M Sport. Must admit, some of the decision was budget focussed - having completed a house refurb we've had to change both cars as they were getting a tad ancient and I didn't fancy having too much capital on the drive on what are, in reality, everyday cars. Also, I needed to change now, not when BMW made some available. Therefore, I was not considering a buying new version - I did however, look at what they were bringing out as I am too much of an accountant to ignore the £ impact of having the older model.

My thoughts:
BMW tend to evolve their designs, as opposed to revolutionise from one model to the next (eg Audi and Merc in my view)
The F11 still looks modern enough to me and hasn't dated too badly
The F11 has all the toys I want in reality, is very capable and comfortable - particularly if spec'ing new so you can get all you want
I didn't drive the 530 - only 520 - due to what was available. 520 wasn't in the running for me, but needed to know that the baseline was
You can get some cracking deals at the moment - particularly on options

That said, I tend to keep my cars for some time - personally not the most fussed about getting the latest thing.

Only done 200 miles in the car since the weekend so can't give you a full view - so far though, really positive.

I've got a 640D GC (which I believe is the same engine) it's a fantastic combination with the 8 speed gearbox, very smooth and wafty when you want it to be, but quite quick for a heavy car when you boot it (assume the 8 speeds help here).
Drive one I don't think you will be disappointed.

The new 5 Touring is about a year away. There will be a 535d - there just isn't at launch.

'Tis a good idea. They are great cars. Just ignore the CBS oil change interval and do it every 10k.

I have just taken delivery of the very last of the F10 535D M Sport's.
Mine has Moonstone paint and Merino Cashmere beige leather , all extras. I love it.
It goes really well too.

Wow that looks lovely!

Did you get the 25-30% off that the OP states could be available.

Seems a little high to me even for a run out model!

Ignore me, broadspeed are doing 27% off list at the moment. Unsure if that discount will relate to optional extras to. Anyone know? Lot of car for the money.

If you want he touring 5 series it's F11 or a long wait for the new 5 series variant.

It's a 535d now I'll bet it will be called 540d in the new car.

There is nothing wrong with the 530d but knowing the 535d exists and is 60bhp more might sway your view. Though in reality the 520d is perfectly adequate but this is PH.

I run one of the oldest F10 535d it was a demo maiden to the hilt which is great for me. Will the new 535d be better he'll yes but it might be a year away and as others have mentioned you might get a years depreciation free motoring on he run out models from Broadspeed or it's competitors.

Remember the 535d can be mapped to 390bhp if that's what your wanting to do which is sub 5 seconds to 62mph and sub 11 seconds to 100mph. A 530d will never do that instead it could get to 535d standard output level.

You might find a stunning deal on run out 550i models which is not far off E60 M5 pace.

Cheers for the replies chaps!
Some food for thought certainly (although a decision will have to be made soon as build slots are running out!)

For those with a 5 m-sport what options would you suggest are worth having? My current configuration has got VDC, pan sunroof M-sport plus, Prof plus media, driving assistantnce plus (mainly for active cruise) Nappa leather, confort pack, vented front seats, mfd dash. anything else you think I should go for?

I would not order VDC on its own - either Adaptive Drive, or nothing.

VDC removes the M Sport suspension and gives you non Sport suspension but with an active 'Sport' mode. This means it sits higher than an M Sport and even in Sport mode, does not handle like an M Sport. The ride and handling of the passive suspension is absolutely fine.

If you do want adaptive suspension, go for Adaptive Drive - once the Dynamic Drive function is added to VDC it transforms the car.

Do NOT forget the Adaptive Headlights with High Beam Assist. Almost nobody bothers, this can only be because they do not understand the system because it is exceptional on the LCI. Even with just Xenon lights it does the beam splitting thing, it is worth every penny.

MFD isn't worth it IMHO. You get the nice full black panel as standard now and MFD seems like a wasted opportunity. It isn't like the Audi virtual cockpit system that displays mapping etc, it offers no additional functionality over the Full Black Panel Display, it just presents it all digitally.

Don't forget Sport Auto Transmission either. The paddles are almost never needed really but the better shifter and nicer shift software is good to have and it's one of the cheapest options you can get anyway.

It's also worth test driving both the 530d and the 535d. I did and whilst the 535d was obviously quicker, it wasn't the night and day experience I was expecting and wasn't enough for me to rule out a nice 530d if one came along. That said I was struggling for months to buy a good used one rather than ordering a new one so perhaps I'd have felt differently without that particular challenge.

Adaptive lights is a must
HUD
Air cooled and heated front seats
Comfort seats
Electric tailgate
Extended storage
There is a special extra luggage thing which works really well with estates and can lift 75kg
5 year service pack
Auto dimming rear mirror and side mirrors
TV function & if you have kids the rear entertainment pack is good
Extended leather really is nice and I wish I had it.

Dump the roof, who uses it when A/C is on the car, get HUD and Comfort Seats, Adaptive lights, Electric boot opener.
I went for Merino Leather as the STD stuff is like plastic.

If that's achievable then I could trade my car in oart x buy a brand new one and get a year or two years free motoring!! Have I read that correctly?

Did you take a PCP? Ive been looking at a 440i when my lease goes back but if I can get 30% on a 535D then that a no brainer.
