If he does it his way, you both trade equal drinks with each other, you both buy each other a pint. Sure on his round he saves two quid... but he also ends up drinking a drink worth two quid less... My round: 2 beers = £7

If he does it on someone elses round, he buys them a pint, they buy him a coke, he is making a loss. The way he is doing it is correct if everyone wants to be equal in terms of what they owe each other.
Sure over the course of a night he spends less, but he also drinks that exact amount less in drinks value. Whats the problem?

Man, everyone gets so wound up about stuff like this. I've got a couple of mates who always take the piss with rounds but life's too short to care. I don't begrudge paying a few quid more on a night out TBH. I'd rather the person was good company than deadeye accurate about rounds.

Slightly more on topic: what's the etiquette regarding late arrivals and buying rounds?
When I go out, I will walk into wherever we're meeting, locate friends, walk over and check if anyone wants another drink.
One of our group, without fail, will NEVER locate the group first, preferring to go to the bar, get his own drink (two bottles invariably as they're 2 for a fiver) THEN come over. Having bought 2 bottles it now means not only did he not top up the table, so to speak, on arrival, but he won't be getting up to get the next round as he's now nursing 2 drinks!
Acceptable or nay or is this just another incidence of my twisted logic?

Regarding the Coke/beer/Coke thing, I'm not sure about that. It feels wrong, but I can't put my finger on why.

I've had times when my food/ drink is around £20, but splitting the bill has increased in to £30+ so yes it's slightly unfair. I worked with a guy who was legendary for avoiding a round. If you were in a club and getting a drink he'd appear from nowhere just as you were ordering, if it was his round he'd disappear and reappear a few minutes later with two drinks for himself. At the end of the night he'd wait until we started to get taxis then jump in to ensure he was next to the door and get out first without paying.
The best one, which I still find amusing was when a group of us were walking to a pub, me at the front chatting to him. He knew I'd already got one in so his turn next. As we got to the door, I was mid sentence and he actually moonwalked to the rear of the group and started an instant conversation with another guy!
We,d had enough and one night all drained our glasses and waited. Eventually someone piped up "who's round" and almost in union pointed and shouted his name.
