Tailored Suits
Discussion
So to BTTT this
I'm in a similar boat to the OP. I rarely wear a suit, but need a new one since I'm slimmer than when I bought my last one years ago. It's got to be all things to all events. I'm guessing Interviews, Weddings and Funerals.
Thinking off the rail, with a bit of fettling
2 Button
"Tailored" type fit
Probably Black (Blue seems a tiny bit informal) and no pattern, however slight, or stripes.
Worth sticking to the high streets TM Lewin, Moss, Debenhams, M&S? Circa £3-400 all in
Or spend a bit on a Paul Smith or Boss item? Not so much in terms of fit, but material quality?

The best tailor in the country.
Whoah! Blast from the past for me there. In the mid-90s as a student I used to get paid £20 an hour for Mr Goldings' apprentices to practice measuring up. For whatever reason they also got me to try out something they were making for Prince Edward. I know squat above military tailoring but did seem impressive in terms of how much structure the jacket had. I see they're still based out of St Albans then? The best tailor in the country.
This is your man, based in Great Baddow.
I've just used him after a recommendation from here who was related to him.
Very impressed with the service and the finished product.

Like real button holes on cuffs, mark of a bespoke suit
I've had plenty of off the leg suits that have had functional button holes. An aside - I was chatting to a tailor a few days ago who can and does make bespoke, but for his own suits he buys from a high street retailer (Reiss usually) at a discount and modifies.

I'd go dark navy or charcoal. Formal enough for funerals when paired with a white shirt and a black tie. A black suit is too sombre for other occasions. I'm in a similar boat to the OP. Ahh. Good point. I'll have a look at very dark Blue of very dark grey as alternatives.Certainly initial searches suggest more options in those colours.

A proper suit should take at least 5-7 years to make from scratch. Sign of good quality.
which of course is absolute horse-st. I've known suits take months and be st. Some of the most expensive bespoke suits can be ready in days if you are willing to pay. Complete and utter bks.Johno said:

Search reveals a few threads (see what I did there!) on this but nothing recent so would appreciate a bit of up to date advice and recommendation.
I'm hitting the half century in a few weeks and to mark the significance, rather than the usual Birthday Berni Inn and Bunk Up, the OH has kindly offered to arrange for me to have a Tailored Suit made. I don't wear suits everyday; mainly for big meetings and posh dos. I work in what is loosely described as the 'creative industries' albeit it in a specialised field and have a preference for a style that is subtly quirky. I've two off the peg William Hunt suits that I quite like, but neither are particularly durable.
So, any pointers and recommendations would be gratefully received.
I'm in Chelmsford if that's important and budget wise; I'm an Omega Seamster, Mercedes kind of guy....rather Rolex/Roller.
Thanks in advance
Trotter and Deane in Bury St Edmunds is just up the road and will tailor you whatever you want, plus you get to see/feel the clothes, linings, buttons etc etc .... John and the guys are very good. Alternatively Dapper Fox in Bury SE as well and James is ex T&D and I have suits from both which I'm very happy with.I'm hitting the half century in a few weeks and to mark the significance, rather than the usual Birthday Berni Inn and Bunk Up, the OH has kindly offered to arrange for me to have a Tailored Suit made. Many stores visited. Sadly the vast majority of stuff I saw was in sizes that they can't shift (hence Sales) And also there's a real lack of weight to the cheaper stuff. One felt like paper!
Oh and in the space of 45 seconds in Moss, I was asked by 3 different sales people if I was OK. I left, not a fan of getting badgered!
TBH I don't want a £150 or under suit. I'm happy to pay for quality. Just finding something between £150 and £750 (and I like) is tricky.
Just seems a duff time to be trying. Have to wait a few weeks for the bargain hunters to subside a bit.
