Manchester isn't a bad night out at all - it is a little spread out though, but hardly something to complain about...

I can recommend:

Lounge on 12 - great views
The Gas Lamp - basement bar with a bit of character
Alberts Schloss

Mr Coopers House & Garden if you fancy a meal.
A little?? Try very? Ands it almost impossible to nagivate there doesn't seem to be much of a 'route' round the place i.e. a flow of people. It's badly lit, all looks the same, huge granite buildings that go on and on with no character. There must be a policy by the council for having no junk food, we walked for maybe an hour, and found a tiny Golden Arches, where's the greggs, kebab shops etc? In most cities you fall out of a club into a takeaway. Imho all round weird, depressing, oppressive place that needs to be more accommodating to visitors.
I guess I'm not a sheep that needs a street lamp.

Never had a seconds trouble in Liverpool, Matthew street and the Krazy house mainly.
Did find in Manc that if you are with a group of friends then most aggression will go away once it realises there are a few of you.
Definately wouldn't get trolleyed there.
There must be something about (at least one of) your mates.

I am a guilty veteran of hundreds of heavy nights out in Manchester with no literally no bother.

There is a month of different nights out to be had without going in the same bar twice, so do some research OP, and go with a plan - it will make the difference.

Been going out in Manchester since the late eighties on and off, cant think of any bother I have had an have been pretty drunk, generally not seem much aggression either.
It might have been down to going out with lads from Salford, never had any hassle in Liverpool.
Didn't mean it to sound like a judgement on either city, just citing experience.

I have recently moved from near Liverpool to near Manchester with the associated change in nights out. I have found that Manchester has a higher instance of aggression, at least from my limited view from where Ive been.

The best night I had was in Sankeys, but they closed that last week at zero notice, which was a shame.

Depending how open minded you are I have actually found Canal Street to be a really fun night out, but you obviously arent going to be pulling any birds there..

Makes me wonder if the Gay Village sited there just to make use of that fantastically appropriate and amusing abbreviation ?

Cant think of any other street or road names that would be so suitable.

I'll be honest I preferred Newcastle, Nottingham and Leeds to the night out I had in Manchester.

Comedy place was good. Beetham tower overpriced and full of yuppie Wannabees sipping overpriced cocktails.

Like every town, it's all dependent on the places you choose. I wouldn't go to the tower if it was free.

You can any sort of night out in Manchester, the breadth of choice is not bettered outside London.

Manchester is OK, I much prefer Liverpool though.

Visited Manchester in big groups and with smaller groups whilst friends were studying there, in big groups we couldn't get in anywhere. Deansgate Locks was Chavtastic, then one or two nice bars in Town itself.

I just prefer Liverpool, local / small and live bands, Clubs and Bars around Concert Square or head off to Mathews St, never had any trouble and only seen one or two fights, bouncers / staff are much friendlier too.

Yep.

I was raised and educated in Manchester and spent a lot of time there when I was a student and thereafter with work.

For years I thought it was great. And, in fairness, it's still not a bad old place. In the eighties and nineties it was a brilliant place to be.

Then work took me to Liverpool.

At first I despised Liverpool, having been brought up with that ingrained hatred of all things scouse which goes with a Mancunian upbringing.

But Liverpool is great. Much smaller and better looking than Manchester. Easier to get your bearings. And the natives are more down to earth and friendly.

And you will never have as much fun as an evening in the company of a lively scouse girl.

Liverpool retains its cultural identity more strongly than Manchester, which, in comparison, feels vast, cosmopolitan and anonymous. It's much more difficult to get a feel of Manchester, rather like London.

I've never had any trouble in either city, but in my old age, I much prefer Liverpool. It's just such a down to earth, friendly and unpretentious place.

I like authentic pubs, real ale and live music. So if I was in Manchester I would head to the Northern Quarter, which feels more easy going and bohemian than the rest of the city.

Wherever you go, if you are in the right company, then you will have a great time.

Nah the Winston is the one for a proper night out wink. The Ship was also mentioned in dispatches - gone now though. Same goes for the Wellington.

I reckon the Bricklayers will be gone in 5 years too.

Hmm, well it's ok, better than Manchester but not as good as Newcastle.

Scuttlers, Lower Turks Head and if you really want to go back to 1890 try the Hare and Hounds in Shudehill, it is like a Timewarp, we went in in 2006, then went back in 2016 and it as if it had been paused for ten years, really is an interesting place, full of older folk, not for one second is it edgy, but it is an experience.

Try Fab Cafe, always interesting.

Agreed Liverpool tries very hard to make itself welcoming, and it shows. Manchester, dreadful place, avoid at all costs. Birmingham similar, for the size of the city very few bars, although the letterbox development is good, but like most places is more food orientated.

about Manchester!

I live in Birmingham and its great for a night out but fancied a change of scenery.

Birmingham has quite a few good places all within a 10 minute walk from each other like the Mailbox

Brindley place

Arcadian

Summer Row

Rainbow Venues

If you've never been to Brum its a good night, I just fancy a change.

Fixed that for you, Manchester is truly a sthole for a night out, psychotic knuckle dragging blokes and slappers bussed in from the boondocks of Wigan and Rochdale.
How dare you yikes this picture of a Manchester night out has all the makings of a true renaissance work of art i hear
