I want to open an old safe (key not combination), will drilling into the lock work?

Probably best to post some images of the offending safe.

If you know the make of the safe it's likely someone will have put a video on Youtube of how easy it is to get into it.

Angle grinder to the hinge. Drilling may work eventually but it's a bit 'hit n miss' eh. Only one way to find out.

The backs of safes are often the weekest part, many were designed to be built in, if its substantial drill the hinges.

No one knows what is inside.

My parents moved into this house in 1977, and it was locked then.

It is in a cellar so would be very difficult to get up the stairs.

If there is nothing in it, why lock it? Which makes me think there must be something in it.

An angle grinder is a good idea.

Looks like you could drill the hinge pins out a lot easier and you'd be able to renew them and re-use the safe in future.

A friend got a locksmith to open one - his brother dies, they had to clear the house out and couldn't find the keys.

Alternatively, go into the dodgiest pub you can find and say there's a few £ in it for anyone who can open it wink

Once the door is off, you'll be able to get at the lock from the inside and either sort out a key or replace the lock.

There's probably a spare key inside.

Do old safes contain asbestos ? it might be a bit risky attacking it with an angle grinder if it does.
