I have until Mid April to sort some st out and I have no idea where to start so what better place than PH.
I am fully expecting loads of ridiculous suggestions in the hope that someone might say something good but yeah..any ideas?
Going abroad out of the question too as we have a child who will be 5months old.
My OH turned 30 last year, threw a surprise birthday party for her in a nice venue and bought her Diamond earrings.
Also talked her into buying a BMW Z4 but she had to pay for that hehe

If I were to organise a party do you know how much they cost usually?

I'd say something small, probably around 50 odd people but at a nice place in the country or similar.

I've never done anything like this and have no idea of the cost.

I'm hiring out a local community cinema for my wife's 30th. They'll be playing 80s classic films all day, hopefully if I've done my research properly they'll be the ones my wife grew up watching. Cinema seats about 100 people, they'll likely be 40 or 50 throughout the day as people come and go - her family need to travel up to see us and also have kids/commitments.

If there's no local community cinema near you (Vue/Odeoon is too expensive) there are popup cinemas where you could do a drive in and a burger van/something similar

The thing for me, something generic from the High St isnt really going to be that interesting to her, it's not a memory as such and to her they're more important than £££ gifts.

Already has one. It cost me £1200 with the matching purse.
I still have nightmares to this day.
In that case, another colour one. Black & Brown, trust me, it will go down as well as the first....

I suspect if your wife was 40 that 80s films would make more sense?

A piece of jewellery made out of her birthstone. With any luck it's something cheap like coal rather than diamonds or pearls!!

Or rather than a surprise party at home with all the associated issues (parking, mess, accidents, etc) why not hold it at a local restaurant? Depending on how many you invite you could foot all the bill or just the food/drink.

Not really. You can grow up watching films that were released many years earlier, but were available on VHS readily in the early 90s and were/are cult classics.

Films like Ferris Bueller, Breakfast Club etc, were just as popular in 1997 when Mrs OP was 10 as they were in 1987, perhaps more so

The cost will vary massively depending on where you want the party, how many attend, the type of food, the entertainment etc

I hired the function room of this place as it has nice views over Swansea Bay (funnily enough it was one year ago this Saturday)

https://www.sabrain.com/pubs-and-hotels/south-wale...

They did a very nice spread buffet (bit more upmarket not sausage rolls if you get me hehe )

I had a band play then for approximately 2-3 hours with guests totalling about 60-70

Total not incl the earrings was about £1,000 if I recall correctly.
However having the same say in the south east could cost 3 times that.

Best thing to do is find some locations you like, email or call them explain what you're looking for an get some quotes in.
If you're having a band make sure you have a good look around, the prices I was quote ranged from unbelievably cheap to ridiculously expensive.

A set of saucepans, or a new steam iron. The ones she's got will probably need replacing by now.

Weekend away somewhere....
Let her think all 3 of you are going away, arrange to meet the kid-sitters en-route hand over the kid, then go off on your own.

Could do a weekend at hotel / cottage in the countryside somewhere.

Get a suite - have a bottle of champagne in the room waiting for her.

Not really, not in our case anyway - DieHArd, Ghostbusters, Ferris Buellers Day Off, Back to the Future were all films she watched at home on video with her family on Sunday evenings/Christmases etc. I hope...

We have a 4 month old, to be honest at this stage I'd rather not leave her with anyone because she bawls her eyes out if it's not Mum or Dad (wonder weeks are great), is teething and has a specific routine for bedtimes, so I can understand if the OP is hesitant to do this and go off as just Mr and Mrs for a weekend. If it was us, we'd probably be too concerned whats happening at home so would likely take her with us.

Pretty much that.
Good to see someone who understands!
