Hi everyone

I am after some advice, i have a Mondeo Estate (2016) and i now need to get a rear mounted bike rack

The roof has the roof box, so i need a bike rack for the rear. I also dont have a toe-bar.

I also have dogs, so i need to get the rear boot open once i get the bikes off, can anyone recommend a rear mounted bike rack which i can also open the boot lid once the bikes are off?

Thanks
Nick

That's odd, I just checked the Saris configurator and it says that none of their hatch mounted racks fit the latest Mondeo.
Does it have something strange (or a spoiler) on the hatch that will prevent a hatch mounted rack from being fitted?

If they're like the Focus, the outer skin of the tailgate is plastic, with nowhere to attach the strap clip thingys found on hatch mounted racks.

In your boat, I'd get a towbar fitted, and use a flip out type rack on that to keep access to the boot.

Hi Nick,
The only other thing I can think of is, if your roofbox doesn't cover the entire width of the bars, then you should be able to get 2 or maybe 3 on the roof next to the 'box.

I could get 5 on the roof of our old family Zafira, mounting them in alternate directions, minus pedals, with the handlebars turned 90 degs:

5 on the roof, 3 on the tailgate.

I was going to recommend Thule, but checking their website, it doesn't list a 2016 Mondeo for their hatch mounted carriers.

So I'd still recommend Thule, but get a towbar fitted. More expensive but.... Unless you can juggle the roof box and get a couple bikes up on the roof alongside it?

if it helps, it cost me just £200 to get a towbar, fitted, supplied and fully wired on my mondeo hatch.

was amazed I managed it so cheap- even on line kits/ebay weren't that much cheaper and certainly not worth the hassle of fitting myself, when so cheap.

shop around- it might give you more scope for a towbar mounted set up.

Haha, it was carrying a Römer child's bike seat in the boot too, so transport for 9.

I was taking two family's worth of bikes for a week's holiday in Sweden. The other family flew in from Australia (wife is Swedish).

We priced up hiring bikes locally for them for the week, it was going to be thousands of Kroner so I got creative with the Zafira. I also had about 40 litres of wine and a few barrels of German beer on board too.

i've often wondered if there's any way you could atttach the straps for a rear mounted rack to the roof bars.

Our 5 series E61 (Touring) had a plastic spoiler at the top which meant there was nowhere to attach the straps and I always thought it would be possible to rig it fit around the rear roof bar.

But never tried it.
