I am looking for some guidance on bulletproof material and am hoping someone on pistonheads might have some experience.

What would be the right soft material to place inside a leather bag/briefcase that could stop a single round from a small calibre firearm?
9mm, at a medium range, regular bullet, fired in the street.

So far I have been looking at Kevlar woven fabrics as a single 30x40cm insert, but am not sure what to look for.

I live in Brooklyn at the moment in a nice brownstone. Someone got shot and killed right outside in the street last year with what was most likely a 9mm. Happened at night and didn't hear a thing!
Been shot at when I lived in Bueons Airies by drug dealers, but not in a serious way. More of a warning shot than anything else.

Not planning to go to any war zones and my job is not connected with security in any way.

I am designing a leather briefcase that has some tech built in. World-wide geolocation tracking, RFID blocking, smartphone mobile charging, rapid backup and a few more things. With this in mind adding really basic bullet-resistant material might be a good plan.

Can't help on material but good luck getting that bag up in front of you quicker than a 9mm leaves the barrel.

1/2" steel plate is readily available and will stop 9mm.

You are quite right, this would be very much just be extra protection. Better than nothing.

Would work but too heavy.

All the plates are too heavy and would set off metal detectors every time.

That's a very strange question to post on an internet forum, if you don't mind me saying so.

Oh, bullet proof and light weight? Granite is about 1/3rd of the density of steel.
