I was in Melksham today and found myself behind a beautiful showroom condition 89 Ford Escort RS Turbo in that metallic grey I always thought suited it best. It was entirely bog standard and a car that brought a nostalgic lump to my throat. When we hit a stretch of dual carriageway I pulled past for a proper look ( which wasn't hard, it was doing about 15mph). Only to see the driver. A little old lady in her early eighties in full Wurthers spec knitwear and hearing aids. If this is what the grannies in Melksham are nipping to the Post Office in...... just WTF are the boy racers bringing to the party ?

Anyone know of a Lamborghini driving ninety year old?

My father's 80th birthday party at a posh hotel featured various guests from the motor industry in various classic/exotic cars.

So the custom metallic sky blue Audi R8 that appeared in the car park got a lot of interest.

We discovered it wasn't one of my father's guests, but a little old lady in an unrelated party. On interrogation, she revealed she'd had it made in the unique blue as it "made it look faster".

Used to be a little old lady round my way that had a DB7. She could barely peer over the wheel as well!

Some old bird where I live now passes through in a new Boxster S. She doesn't dawdle either, its great!

Back in the seventies when I was an apprentice in a BL franchise, one of our customers a woman in her seventies, traded in her Marina 1300LE coupefor an MGB GT. At the same time there was another local woman of about 80 used to tootle around in a 3Litre Capri.

Reminds me of an article in Autocar back in the 90's, they took 3 of the latest hot hatches to be test driven by an old lady who used to do abit of rally driving back in the day.

The lady was charging around some A roads at a fair old lick that thouroughly impressed/terrified the journalist. The article concluded with the lady declaring the Clio 16v her favourite and promising to pop in to her local dealer to try and work out a deal.

There's a senior looking lady (I'm guessing she's 75+) who cruises around Salisbury in a lovely metallic blue SL65.

It sounds lovely....

Occasionally see an elderly lady on a Ferrari near me (though I live near a Ferrari garage and she looks like she's a bit glam anyway). My old boss, woman in her mid 60s, mint mk3 rs turbo.

One that stays in my mind was when me and the mrs were stuck in a traffic jam near Gordano services on the way to Cornwall about 6/7 yrs ago. A brand newish 6.2L VXR8 in metallic blue pulled up next to us, I was admiring the big brakes at first then looked up and was shocked to see a little grey haired lady of a senior vintage sat upright against the steering wheel, she glanced across with a knowing smile as I gave here the thumbs upthumbup

Got talking to an 'older' gent at Bedford one day a couple of years back, he was driving a Cayman R.... he then pointed out to the circuit where his wife was piling on the laps in a new R26R... that she'd bought for her 75th birthday... now that's the sort of retirement we want..
