Just chatting with a mate about the Cayman GT4 and I mentioned that while I love the concept, it never truly appealed to me because of the engine. And that if it had a a tuned 3.4 making ~370+ bhp it'd be right up my street.

Which got me idly pondering about 3.4 litre 991.1s. Given that the 3.8 DFI lumps in the 997.2 and 991.1 cars are broadly similar to my knowledge, could you not possibly fit a 997.2 or 991.1 (lightly modified if necessary) powerkit to the 3.4 litre 991.1 to make it more enjoyable? According to this doc:

http://www.porscheengineering.com/filestore/downlo...

....the 997.2 and 991.1 powerkits include new intake, polished cylinder heads, exhaust and remap. With the 991.1 also including a different inlet cam.

Would be interested to know if the 3.8 powerkits for the DFI engines were fundamentally compatible with the 3.4 DFI engines (subject to say some different ECU tuning) since a lot of the parts are common.

Interesting thoughts. I have the same issue as you about the GT4 engine, the X51 version would have been awesome.

Now if I can Powerkit my CGTS.......

Look at Ehresman. 370+ bhp quite comfortably on later 3.4 Boxsters.

Here you go 385PS in a 981 Boxster.

Thanks, I know 370bhp from the 3.4 is doable, have come across the ehresmann work before (have actually been in contact with him in the past), my musings were more on a technical/engineering level and specifically whether the 997.2 or 991.1 powerkits could be relatively easily adapted to the 3.4.

If it would be a reasonbably "off the shelf" solution, I'm wondering if Porsche ever considered going down the power kit route for any of the Caysters and if not why not. Was it only financial (cheaper to just stick a 3.8 in) or were there other reasons.

I'm just intrigued by what if scenarios smile Bit like I've always been curious about where we'd be if they been allowed to keep the air cooled engines, or if thinking about another marque, if Honda had ever built a straight 6 version of the F20C engine

Powerkit is camshafts, heads and plenum.

As for the engines, they look the same side by side.

The 3.8L engine responds well to better headers plus on the intake side IPD plenum, 82mm throttle and BMC air filter, all optimised with a custom tune. It is not a lazy engine in this form and will run to 7.8k before power drops off. With a Powerkit on this you can get to 8.1k before power drop off.

As to the OP question, I'd suspect the parts would fit but would require a lot of effort on a dyno to develop the tune.

The 3.8 was off the shelf with an ecu de tune, the 3.4 with 370 hp would have required a lot more work than an ecu tune!
On your last point I think many would have been interested if it was a 370hp screamer but if it was just an ecu tune as per CR/GTS then NO! Was never interested in a 981 until the gt4 came along!
As for the original question it would be cheaper to buy a Gt4 in long run than to tune a Gts it will also devalue to less than a 981s far better to start with a cheap 981S or even better still a 987.2S!
