My wife has a deformation of the spine which now has got to the stage where sitting in the car is uncomfortable for her.

I want to try and make a custom seat back cushion.

I am thinking of using foam that I can cut to shape and cover. Please can anyone advise what sort of foam I should use? It needs to be reasonably dense so that it will be self supporting, and if it was possible to glue together to make complex shapes that might be useful.

If anyone has experience of this sort of thing, I'd be pleased to hear your advice.

You need upholstery foam. Comes in various densities, can be glued with copydex and cut to shape with a hot knife or hot wire. Then cover with fabric, leather, alcantara etc to suit.

Either buy on line or from a local haberdashery. I made a set of boat cushions from a supplier in Sawston, if you're local to Cambridge I can dig up the details.

This is what I was thinking - can you give any advice/links on what type of foam would be best? Now off to search for hot knife...

I thought about this, but the result is essentially a shaped firm block to fit a shell. I'm looking to make an additional backrest for the existing seat in the Subaru.
