Being poor isn't what it's cracked up to be...
Discussion
In the pub near my parents' house I used to go to there was a regular who had quite a bit of money as a big local landlord.
"Young man, how old are you?"
"20."
"Don't talk to me about being 20! When I was 20 I had nothing. I lived in a room above a tobacconist with my mate Jim. We had nothing at all but I've never been happier than I was being poor!"
"Well why aren't you doing it now, you miserable old ?"

I think it's a sign of the times - people have become more focused on material goods and the need to travel round the world on flash holidays.
Have you not just contradicted yourself there? People have become more focsed on material goods.
And holidays (the very definition of a non material good?).

I think people equate money = happiness, and having enough money is part of that but its a small part, however it needs you to have been in a position of wealth to perhaps see it, there is a sweet spot, having no money is rubbish and having too much can be a problem also, but very few get that.
You need enough to provide the basics and then enjoyment on top of that, it provides options and possibilities, you can travel, buy things and sort problems out, being poor is expensive, prepayment meters, Brighthouse etc, having a reasonable amount lets you be more prudent.
I think happiness is much more complex than money, a lot depends on health, fitness, age, mental state and so many other factors.
Always amazes me the horrible stuff humans will do to aquire wealth, I can understand hustling a bit to feed yourself and your family but what I cant get is what companies and individuals will do to earn money, even when they dont need it, and how much wealth people seem to feel they need to generate and hold on to, you only get 70, 80 ? years to spend it.

This sums up my dad, he was so fixated on money that the greed possessed him, did nothing to plan for his death, no will, refusing to marry my mum, kicking off over anything spent in the household. An intolerable man, and my mum deserves a lot of medals for putting up with him, especially in his last few years battling cancer (lost his eye sight too). I couldn't help but think this was karma, which is a horrible thing to say but the money really did make him an evil horrible person.
