Had mine last year, got some lovely surprises leading to memories, not material things....

Surprise trip to Prague for a weekend with my 2 best mates - was supposed to be going to one of their houses overnight for a booze up and Ale Trail round Henley, was surprised with them on my doorstep at 7.30 saying we're off to Gatwick smile

Then my teenagers treated me to a walk round Virginia Waters and a picnic, whilst unbeknownst to me my wife was prepping the house for my 50th Party with close friends and family

Then I was treated to a mid week break away with the family to a chocolate box Country Cottage in the Cotswolds, then my Dad surprised me the following weekend with a Glider flight at Lasham, and finally he also treated me to some hot laps round Thruxton in a variety of cars, Cayman, 570S and a single seater whilst being left in the dust of Tiff Needell doing obscene alien speeds in an M2 doing passenger rides.

For MrsPB’s 30th, a few years ago, I bought us tickets to Australia - maybe use it as an excuse to book a great holiday?

My 50th is in January, TBH I'm not that fussed about it, I guess something nice and expensive (ish) like a watch that I can treasure for my remaining days, to be passed on to my grandkids would be nice.

My wife was 50 in January, she does like a fuss and loves being the centre of attention (I hate both), we went away for a weekend over her birthday as a family; both daughters, their boyfriends, MiL, grandsons and dogs, we had a great time, I think this is what my daughters want to do with me, I don't though! Preferring to just maybe go away for a weekend European city break with the wife, to include a decent Michelin star meal (I do like my fancy food).

The wife has a huge circle of friends with differing friendship groups, women are great at doing things for their friends, gets bloody expensive though when it is reciprocated and I struggle with it all, probably as a) birthdays don't really interest me and b) I don't have many friends. She is still doing things for her birthday which was in January, it is now mid April!

I'm just not really a birthday person in general, it's just another year older and another day in my life.

A superb combination I would say and some great ideas from that for the OP (and myself for when that time comes!).

I was 50 in January. I did a trackday on my birthday with my family in attendance and giving them some passenger rides, and a racing mate, then home for a curry and opening a few pressies.
Best birthday I've had.

Still got a couple of other things lined up this year to do, mostly motoring, but some parties and nights out as well.

For my 50th my wife bought me a really nice camera. This was something I'd always wanted but could never justify (afford) the cost.

I use it loads, and I've learnt a lot having some decent kit.

My missus turned 50 back in February. She didn't want a big song and dance making about it (loads of friends have organised big parties, hired pubs etc...not really my or her thing).

She's always wanted a go at off road driving, so I booked her a driving experience (only told her when we were pulling up outside)… bit of a knackered MK1 Land Rover Discovery and an hour of instruction in driving through deep puddles and mud. She loved it! Went to the pub afterwards for a few pints.

I also bought her a decent pair of Altberg boots and a very expensive pair of Fjallraven trousers as a present (we both do a lot of hiking).

I was definitely in the good books.

I'm 50 next year - I'm thinking about a handheld sat nav system for a present (hiking again). And a few pints in the pub (again).

Not even 40 yet, but I took my parents to the US for each of theirs (vastly different places though).

Just do that but not as a birthday celebration if you had a great time. smile

I'm 50 in June and Mrs Toon has arranged for a child free weekend in London complete with a nice hotel and tickets to Ronnie Scott's. Making memories and enjoying life are more important to me than material gifts. That being said, I am planning on treating myself to a new watch while I'm there ;D

My 50th came and went, my 60th came and went. Nothing, nada, a couple of cards.

So in my 61st year I bought myself a Triumph Speed Twin 900 and an Abarth 695 Competizione biggrin

I'll be 50 this year and the only thing I'd want is a family to share it with. But I stopped getting 'things' for birthdays when I was about 20. Since then it's been going out for a meal somewhere nice. Or a special home-cooked dish - the sort that takes several hours to prepare.

Don't waste your time collecting stuff. Waste it doing things you'll remember until you're gone, and better still waste it doing things other people will remember after you're gone!

As for me, I've always wished to visit Japan and it's always been a "next year" thing. This year it'll be a THIS year thing!
