They assume you're an inmate who got left behind and pack you off to Rampton for the rest of your life?I used to inspect bits of that place a few years ago.
Meanwhile, back in Manchestoh, I reckon these are the same location - notice the tiled doorway, the two iron beams above it, and the filled in aperture to its left:
1937
1940
2007
BTW after conversing very civily indeed with someone on the 28DL forum, the poster of the the original exploration photos has just realised that that someone is a member here too, and has just rounded on them as a result. Unbelievable

I refrained from adding this earlier, because I thought it was probably wrong, but the persistent story of a buried street, with shop fronts, terraced houses etc, was decribed to me as being in the Spring Gardens area.
Nowhere near these vaults and I thought it was bollox, but the post above about Deansgate makes me think again.
O/T has anyone been into the huge space beneath Piccadilly station approach, where the Rochdale canal runs under it? The road above is supported by hundreds of concrete pillars and there is a set of lock gates completely underground.
When I was a kid the canal was disused and these caverns were accessible via a flight of stone steps round the back of Piccadilly station. They were unlit and well creepy. Later they became a hiding place for smackheads etc, but I believe most of the area has been walled in either side of the canal now. The canal basin beyond has been redeveloped bwyond all recognition. Is it called "paradise wharf" of something similarly naff now?
OO/T some amazing industrial heritage was destroyed when Salford Quays was redeveloped, like the engine shed that used to power the lock gates at Mode Wheel This used to be a short cut from Weaste to Trafford park - you could walk over the tops of the lock gates to cross the Ship Canal.

I'm posting without having read the whole thread, I will go back and read it but its going to take ages....so, I just want to say that I've been down twice underneath the Deansgate area. First time was the best, I was working at Bauer Millett (as a wknd salesman for my sins whilst at uni) and at the time they occupied the Peter st. showroom and what was Motorcade on the Deansgate/Liverpool st. junction (now Hilton). The landlord for Peter st. was Bruntwood or something, and they were responsible in part for the regeneration of The Great Northern Warehouse by the side of GMEX. The woman responsible locally would pop in a lot, and whilst I was down at the Motorcade showroom she came in and offered if I wanted to go down "under Deansgate" for a bit of a mooch round, she was going round with some inspectors or something and thought myself & a colleague would be interested. We obviously said yes and followed her. The access hatch was in the entrance to the car park behind the new Northern Warehouse carpark, in the row or arches where there's a radiator specialist or something. We went down and it has to be by far the most amazing thing I've seen in Manchester. It was all brick-lined, barrel-vaulted roofs, that we were expecting but we came across small room swith beds in which I presume where emergency shelters remaining from the war. What really startled me was running what seemed to be the length of Deansgate was a canal complete with walkway to the side, it reminded me of Ghostbusters when they find a river of ooze under the city, only with no ooze! It had been occupied/accessed since the war obviously since then due to the obligatory graffiti, swastika's et all.
The other time I went underground wa in my next wknd job which was at Habitat on St. Annes st. In the basement where furniture was stored was access to another level underneath, this was quite spooky as the lighting was very poor, but it seemed very similar to what I had seen previously very near by on Deansgate. It seemed that there were blocked up doors linking up to other areas beyond, in fact you could get to all the other shops/units within the block by means of the underground passages, these got locked up by Shabitat for security.
Anyway, I'm going to go back and read the thread properly, sorry if I've repeated anything.
Totally believe you mate - what you're describing sounds exactly like the Manchester and Salford Junction Canal:The other time I went underground wa in my next wknd job which was at Habitat on St. Annes st. Thanks for the link, some absolutely amazing pictures there, when I went though there was no light except from our torches, they've used some pretty impressive flashguns to get those pictures I think. They describe the same manhole cover that I used to get down on Watson street, interesting to hear that the owners of The Northern Warehouse want to develop the underground for general use, it was written in 1994 when it seemed to be a great project but since then the Warehouse seems to have been a bit of a disaster (financially) so could be doubtful now.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manchester_and_Salfor...

It gets better ; latest insult is;QUOTE Well off you toddle then son, f2ck off up manacaparu instead of sitting in front of your keyboard giving us sh1t about places you wont ever get in.
The thing is, they just started this for no reason other than me being a member of PH.
I don't understand what everyone is so annoyed about - that some guys went into the air-raid shelter (not a live military site, as some fool said early on) and took photos... or that you lot didn't get in there first?
The accusations of being 'elitist' are ridiculous.
The history of Manchester is well-documented and was out there for anyone who cared to look.
I say well done for having the balls to go and do something about it, instead of speculating and carping from the comfort of your own keyboard.

Still trying to work out how you can explore something that 10,000 of people have walked through, used, know about LOL.The accusations of being 'elitist' are ridiculous.

the bad feeling comes from doomed parrot asking some fairly straight forward questions because he was interested and you lot pounced on him like the devil possessed.there is a further problem. by antagonising Pistonheads through Parrot, you have opened up a can of worms. most of the Manchester based PHers are now looking for the entrance that 28days have been so careful to keep to themselves. i reckon within a few days it will be found by someone on PH.
