You're right. The person who said my posts were deleted for being 'off topic shite' appears to be one of the owners of the site.

So I think we can surmise that when I ask "Are these tunnels related to the manchester & salford junction canal", a perfectly legimate and definitely not off-topic question if you ask me, and the post is deleted, then I've dropped a pretty massive hint as to the location of their tunnels.

The entrance to the canal is still visible - its here!

I went and had another look at the thread after I replied and noticed Oxygen Thiefs reply. That sums it up well don't you think? Could you imagine if Ted replied to members on here like that?

Like I said, it's elitist bollox. The photos are interesting as always but the site unfortunately has a small minority (which tends to be the ones that run it) of muppets who seem to enjoy nothing better than discovering these sites and then keeping them secret from the rest of the world. Of course, I'm sure if you found some long forgotten, undiscovered cold war bunker or intricate network of secret tunnels the same people would be up your arse before you knew it.

If the world all of a sudden knew how to get into any site, then there would be a mass exodus of people who genuinly wanted to see this site...they would be followed by chavs/pikeys etc who would enjoy trashing the place removing any historical interest....this would result in the local authorities sealing up the site so no one could ever get in again...

Surley you can understand why they are being over cautious about sharing the access info to sites such as that?...

And moreover, because its only been explored once, the people who have done a lot of work figuring out how to get in, feel it is their right to be able to go back and explore more of the place before someone else goes in....

Except more often than not the majority of these sites have already been visited by all of the above.

Not to mention the moment people like 28dayslater start posting photos saying they've been somewhere the authorities set about sealing up access anyway.

Elite snobbery? Just look at OT's reply to PoD. PoD is a well established member on here but because he's new on their board feel it's acceptable to speak to him like a tw@t.

Their right? Why is it their right? How do they know 'Burkey' hasn't finished exploring it? Or 'Eamon' perhaps? Or any of the other people who'd written their names on the yellow sign over the last 20 years?

I know exactly where these tunnels are now. It doesn't take much working out.

The toilets are obviously public toilets accessed from street level, and there are several disused and blocked toilets around the Hanging Ditch/Cathedral/Victoria Station area of Manchester. The tunnels are accessed from those toilets, so it seems to me that they've found a ventilation shaft, an entrance from an existing and accessible property (a shop for instance), an entrance underneath Victoria Station (there are some scary looking tunnels that are blocked off around there), or they've gotten in from the river.

The tunnels may well be connected to the Manchester and Salford Junction canal, personally I think that may be one of their entry points as they very swiftly deleted that post.

My main interest now is would this be suitable material for a television programme - I think it would. Obvious legalities and permissions aside (you can't trespass for television unless its in the public interest), I think an exploration of hidden/secret sites would make for a fascinating series, so I'm going to make a few enquiries.

/edit: at least they've deleted the offensive post to me.

So specifically who owns these tunnels?

What is that streak/flash on the picture showing the urinals? Is it something to do with photographic exposure time?
A long exposure with someone walking along the urinals with a torch to light them I think.

Fantastic pics!

Mystery innit?

Most likely though, the council will own them. If they were privately owned, they'd have found a use for them by now, whether for storage, or office space, or just a tourist thing.

I'm sending out feelers to a few contacts smile If only Fred Dibnah were still around frown

I think the History channel has done some programmes on underground tunnels, cities, etc before?

My Dad had a very interesting tale along these lines.

He had some keanie meanie background so he knew shady goings on when he saw them. He was also a fireman on the Southern Railway in the great days of steam. Either he or one of his colleagues saw a tunnel, filled with locos towards the end of steam. This tunnel was subsequently bricked up at both end and left in perpetuity. He either didn't know or wouldn't say where it was. He died earlier this year so I'll never find out.

That myth is known as the Strategic Rail Reserve. Go post that story on 28dayslater and see how much abse you get.

Kelveden Hatch in essex just of the M11 is open to the public-just follow the "Secret Nuclear Bunker" signs on the A 414 if you want to have a look.
I visited it once and you can explore the whole place from the hospital to the broadcasting suite installed when they converted the bunker from an RAF installation as part of the Rotor project to a national Government retreat.

There is a tiny tracked vehicle outside with a perspex canopy designed to deal with the conditions after an attack.

Very spooky place to visit.

If anyone would have got his facts on this it would have been my old man. He spent the best part of 35 years gaining a fine, detailed knowledge of the railway infrastructure of the UK plus his other experience.

Ho hum. They'll turn up when the balloon does.

Things kinda fall on their face at the "either he or one of his colleagues saw...." part though.

PoD

Great thread, I've just 'wasted' several hours looking at various threads on the 28dayslater site and some of the links, etc

I'm sure you are right about the ventillation shaft as one of the Manchester tunnel guys 'popped home to collect his harness'

Great idea for a TV series, keep us all posted if this goes anywhere

Maybe. Thats the problem with dead people. Never can quite check up on those little facts with them.
