Very funny guys! The original opening is actually just above the top rung and probably led (initially horizontally) to some sort of escape / observation hatch. It has been sealed with concrete which is why it that bit looks a little newer.* You can see that water has leaked in at the bottom of the joint.

Those rungs are to the left in this picture...

which also shows a similar concrete wall sealing up four fifths of the way up the door on the right side of the picture. The aperture at the top right is essentially the top part of a full height doorwy.

Thanks for the well wishes. Plans are still afoot for construction work on site to commence this spring. Sorry for no updates in the meantime.

However, for anyone interested (and because I can't think of anywhere else to paste the pics) i can report that Dave and his family just spent Christmas in a converted nazi watch tower:-

You can't handle the truth!

Son, we live in a world that has tunnels, and those tunnels have to be guarded by men with an internet connection. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Gilbertgrape? I have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. You weep for Bob, and you curse the digging team. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know -- that Bob's demise, while tragic, probably saved lives; and my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, continues to save lives.

You don't want the truth because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me in that tunnel -- you need me in that tunnel.

We use words like "desk lamp," "broom handle" "gaffer tape." We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punch line.

I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to men who rise and sleep under the blanket of the tenuous entertainment that this thread provides and then question the manner in which it provides it.

I would rather that you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a shovel and stand the post. Either way, I don't give a DAMN what you think you're entitled to!

Perhaps the small amount of interest deserves a response, no?

.. however unfortunately it won't be until later this year!

In the meantime, I recently came across this piece of "plagerism" wink, after receiving a lot of referrals from the site. It all started out so well too....

Assume for one moment that there was a tunnel behind where the garage now stands. Trying to blast hillside on top of it without damaging the house would be fairly high risk. Blasting manmade structures is more predictable. You know the structural strengths and can do the calculations. Hillside could have become rooftop. You might need to cap the tunnel entrance with concrete instead. I think we need to stick a very long drill into that concrete and see what’s behind it. Or excavate over the top and see if it changes to a different structure behind.

Just a quick update as i am at work. There were problems the night before last when a sheet of rockface above the spot that had been excavated collapsed back down into the area the digger was working in. We had a geo-engineer in yesterday and another meeting today hopefully with my structural engineer. The digger has not therefore been doing any more work in that area for now. Gutted to be honest frown What was uncovered is hidden again!

I should say that the heavy plant is on site to start the development that i've had pending over the last year, so it will be put to work doing that in the meantime.

I'm afraid I have been working too, so have not been able to take pics at every step along the way like last time. Sorry if not exactly the news that you were hoping for!

Anyway...

Before:

After:

Essentially I've been told that the quarry has been de-stabilised by the roots from all those big trees that had grown over the cliff top over the years (but which have now been cut down) frown

I've got a feeling that explosives may be a little extreme!

In any event, I now appear to have a meeting with 3 engineers (structural, geotechnical and a consultant engineering geologist) on site tomorrow. smile

Out of interest though, how much would you charge for an hours consultation... in/on Guernsey? smile
Hedders. PM sent to answer your question.

Essentially the following has happened today. The geologist guy has basically conducted a full geological survey of the cliff face where we dug. He spent the time on ropes on the cliff face cataloging each of the various fault lines. The rock has basically been penetrated by the roots of the vegetation, which has made fractures worse in places. He had two rope men with him for H&S. Several more chunks of rock have fallen again today.

He's then going to spend another day compiling a full report which will recommend where pins need to be sunk for the netting which all agree seems to be necessary, how deep and whether any further pieces need to be removed. He'll also work out the load bearings necessary for any retaining wall. The report will then advise on a plan of remedial works to stabilise the cliff, and this work will be warranted. Fingers crossed results come over the weekend.

Funnily enough the geology guy was quite interested in our dear departed friend, asked for some photos of Bob in his former glory, so that we could work out whether the big old sphere could have naturally occurred within the rock strata, or whether, as some might hope..... he was lugged on site from somewhere else.

It's been two whole years weeping

Its feeling more like that.

Just a little update. Basically the prelim report that I have is that the upper part of the rockface is covered in joint fractures that "create the potential for medium to large scale planar sliding and wedge sliding failures", with a high risk of harm to persons / property within the site. "Cutting further will siginficantly increase the risk of failure".

So to answer some questions. I can't really dig or remove any more without serious risks, and I'm not prepared to take them. The remedial work involves either removing literally hundreds of tonnes of rock and significantly changing the lie of the land (+possible issues with neighbouring land), with the distinct possibility that even once that is done further risks will be uncovered and shoring up will still be necessary (see option 2). Alternatively, option 2 involves shoring up what is there with nets and rock piles (maybe even shockcrete) and then building a great big retaining wall secured with rock anchors to hold it all back.

To be honest, the more we look into it, the more it looks like it may have to be option 2. And if that is the case, everything there will effectively be sealed for good frown

Whilst the offers of help are much appreciated, I wouldn't be comfortable accepting them at this juncture. But thank you anyway.

What a waste of an afternoon that was...so many questions unanswered:

1) What was in the hatch in the bunker?

2) Did you ever get back in touch with the historian which gave you the rolled up papers?

3) Did you ever investigate the building behind the garage a bit more.

4) What were you looking for in the hole you dug near some patio doors?

5) What decision did you make after getting the £40k potential bill?

6) Can you shed anymore light on the story if you've given up on the rock face?

At least bring this thread/blog to some sort of end.
1) Come on, your'e not expecting me to let the cat out of the bag that easily.

2) In fact I met with him very recently when he offered advice on several aspects of the project.

3) See photo in earlier post

4) An access shaft

5) Make some engineers happy

6)We've not given up yet wink

Breeze blocks where your house used to be? Did it all collapse on to the house? Or is that the extension?
To dig down safely to the level shown in the photo above we ended up going below the old (and pretty much non-existent) foundations of the house, which in turn necessitated a little extra work on that wall too smile
