As per the title, who was caned at school and if so was it so inhumane?

Didn't bother me in the slightest. The fear was far worse than the actual caning!

Didn't they stop caning about 50 years ago? I'm 37 and I know it was banned long before I went to school.

It was the norm so there was no real discussion about it. Discipline was a bit tighter and school a lot more formal. There were all sots of canes but the worst were the really thin bamboo ones, because they could occasionally draw blood if they hit a joint on your hand. Did not happen too often, but I would say I was caned a dozen times or so.

I'm 44 and there was talk of it while I was at school. We laughed, said we'd be uncontrollable without it.

Have to say us kids were quite astute hehe

I was often caned at school - also had corporal punishment a few times...

Sorry someone had to do it...blame the wine and dime bars.

I am 35 and remember watching older children being hit with the cane at primary school.

I went to school in the fifties/sixties and it was quite common at school to get six strokes of the cane..(3 on each hand), which would draw wheals and blood for a trivial offence such as forgetting your homework, or handing it in ten minutes late....yikes

Also, teachers used to throw wooden blackboard erasers at full pelt which would often hit you on the head if you were talking at the back of the class.....again drawing blood.....rage

This was normal, you thought nothing of it, and the parents would often say..."My son probably deserved it"

And if you came home and complained that a teacher had hit you, your dad would hit you again.

These days they'd be down the school threatening to sort out the teacher, probably with a knife ...

We used to get the cane for fighting, when we got into fight the last thing we thought about was getting the cane.
Me and another lad were sent to the head for the cane, we sat outside his office for a few minutes and decided to go away as there would be no communication between the head and the teacher that sent us there so neither would be any the wiser.
I cant say it ever hurt that much when we did get it.

Went to school in SA during the eighties. Caning was par for the course for any offence: forgetting your cadet socks or getting less than 50% in a history exam to name two.

Never did anyone any harm and everyone left the school with a sense of discipline.

It would certainly lick todays parasites into shape if they reintroduced it.

It never had much affect when I was at school, 60s-70s. There was a boy in in my class at primary school who was a complete arse as were his 2 older brothers. When he did something wrong he would be dragged screaming and crying to the head for the cane but it never stopped him being an arse.

He obviously wasn't doing it right.

We never had the cane at our school.
We had the strap.
One particularly vicious bd of a teacher had a split strap with different weights on the end of each bit.
So they travelled at a different speed, so each hit, hit you twice.

At his worst he'd give you six on each hand.

Can't say it ever stopped me missbehaving, but at least you regretted it after.

This was about 1982 not the 50s btw.

Caning sounds harsh but abusing kids with a strap on is just wrong biggrin

No cane, but you had to watch out for the low flying blackboard rubber.

More kids should be caned. The little so and sos need some discipline.
