I got caned a couple of times at junior school but not at 'big school' there we had a youngish teacher who made all the prettiest girls sit on the front rows and the guys at the back.

He would through the blackboard rubber at you if he saw you falling asleep or talking. If you answered back he would get hold of your sideburns and 'lift you out of your seat holding on to them'

Other times if there was some spare time before the bell went at the end of the lesson he would make everyone put their hands on the desk palms down, and he walk by the desks with a ruler in his hand, hovering above your hands. If you didn't move your hands away you were OK but the nervous ones would move their hands and then he would make them put their hands on the desk while he hit you with the ruler.

He was a popular teacher, all the girls liked him and there were rumours he was giving extra tuition to a few.

I'm not convinced caning would disuade the modern oik.

Perhaps clubbing with sticks should be introduced in schools?

Three times in total. 2 for smoking and one for running away to Dreamland in Margate, which was about 15 miles from school. Hitching back , aged 12 at midnight, we got a lift from the local bizzies. That went down like a st sandwich with the house master.

At primary school a friend and I were once given the option of lines or smacking (after we shoved a chilli pepper up someone's nose). We both chose the smacking and felt we'd got off with the lesser punishment.

Slightly out - mid 80's, which squares with my memory of people getting a bit of discipline when I was at secondary & I'm a little bit younger than you.

Didnt have a cane...............did have a wooden ruler / slipper / flying board rubber / clip round back of head.

And yes it did help instill a sense of respect and discipline.

We got the ruler at primary school. Six strokes on the palm of your choice (even for girls.)

A state school - it was excellent then and still is - many of my old teachers are still there.

I go back regularly to say hello, and thank them for inspiring a desire to learn, and for giving me the confidence to try at anything.

Wow that late, maybe it was just my school who stopped using it but I remember falling over an out of bounds wall in infants and a dinner lady saying they used to cane you for going over that wall.

Yep 27 here and I got caned in grade 3. It was a nutto seventh day adventist school however. The whole class of boys got done for having an ace rock throwing war on the fort.

Sister Mary Bernadine wielded a nasty yardstick. The rest made do with their knuckles. Good strong Irish girls they were.

Figured I had burned my bridges with the nuns so I went to a Brothers of the Sacred Heart high school. They were just as bhy as the nuns only they hit a hell of a lot harder.

Brother Roger Argencourt, who had a very appropriate first name was particularly nasty. Google him if you dare!

Sure, it did us no harm...

I have one distinct memory of the punishment being administered by way of on eof those rubber Dunlop gym sneekers!! that certainly inspired me to never do whatever it was i was caught doing again!!!

Whats this cane you all talk of Im a child of the 80's when there was such a thing as the really really harsh punishment of lines i.e x100 I must not ........... . Later on it progressed to detention that was held during break time(15 minutes) and it just meant you could finish off your home work for the next class quickly. Kids are so hard done by these days. NOT.

Bring back the punishment it might make them a bit less mouthy.

I regularly was beaten over the head with a blunt object by my science teacher, and I didn't go complaining to the newspapers about it. I took it like a man.

I'm 30, born in '79 and the cane was always a threat at primary school but I can't remember it ever happening.

In secondary school I played rugby all the time I was there and there were two teachers teaching the classes in my year. One of them was a cock and used to love saying things like 'can you do this flower?' to me when it was something bent like gymnastics or trampolining when both teachers were there.

My teacher was an ex pro rugby player and a top chap. He drove an E Type and even took me to a few matches in it as I got on with him really well. One training session the other teacher turned up with the rest of the lads from our year and it was decided we'd play a match with the teachers on the team they taught. At this stage I was in my last year of high school and about 6' tall and training hard.

Mr Green who was the cock was a couple of inches taller but built like a stick insect. Mr Booth who was my teacher moved me from prop to forward and Mr Green was a gangly winger. Mr Booth told me to tackle him as hard as I liked so his first run was met with a shoulder to the ribs and dropping him on his head. He quickly turned from winger to whinger, I got sent off and Mr Booth gave me the cash to go and get me and him a McDonalds. Green was still whining when I got back and I found it hilarious.

I went a bit O/T and all about me there, apologies. Basically, I agree kids need more discipline but not when it's administered by a bullying moron.

I'm 37, we had the strap in primary school and the cane in secondary school. I never received any punishment but some of my friends did. And if my parents found out that I had been subject to corporal punishment I would have probably been grounded for a month or so.

I have mixed feelings about it, I believe it was a powerful deterrent and there is no denying that the grammar school I went to is a highly desirable school that has great academic and sporting success, the strong discipline that the school had was inherent in this I believe. But now I have a son, I would not be too pleased at someone else hitting him, certainly not at primary school age, probably 13 years old and above would be ok.

We had the cowhide at school. Basically it was a thick leather belt split into two 'tails' at the end. It was standard punishment for stuff like smoking, etc. I had it a couple of times but for some of the guys it was almost a weekly event.
We also had a punishment called 'st shovelling'. Basically, through the winter and spring the rivers that run into Loch Ness bring a lot of small stones and rocks, especially during the spring floods. These would fill up the boathouse and make it hard to get the boats out in the summer term. We had to get in the Loch and lift out all the stones and rocks for an hour. The water was bloody freezing most of the year and you could only last about 15 mins before you came out to warm up before the next 15 min stint.

Our teachers would regularly give us a clip around the ear or chalk/duster/science lab item thrown at us.

This was as recent as the early ninties but to be honest it doesn't bother me and I don't look back with hate at any of it happening. I just saw it as part and parcel of growing up. You knew what the punishment would be so if you can't do the time, don't do the crime as they say.
