Didn't they stop caning about 50 years ago? I'm 37 and I know it was banned long before I went to school.
I'm 42 and I was canned for my honesty.

Long gone by the time I got to school, it would probably have been quite good for a few of the kids though! Unfortunately given that teaching is now a predominantly female profession I doubt getting into physical confrontations with the chavs would be that good an idea really.

I'm only 31 and I was certainly on the receiving end of the cane on a couple of occasions

But I was schooled in South Africa and it's only VERY recently been made illegal over there... doesn't mean it doesn't still happen though. A lot of the parents are still very much in favour of corporal punishment.
Even in the short period of it having being made a no-no, you can already see the negative effect in schools on the pupils for whom corporal punishment is no longer a threat.

Also, teachers used to throw wooden blackboard erasers at full pelt which would often hit you on the head if you were talking at the back of the class.....again drawing blood.....rage

This was normal, you thought nothing of it, and the parents would often say..."My son probably deserved it"
+1 for the blackboard erasers. It was what you got for not paying attention. How else was the teacher expected to get your attention back to the board without disrupting the rest of the class?
Although I don't think there were ever any cases of drawing blood from an eraser.

I wasn't caned, but did get more ruler smacks, and clouts from thrown blackboard erasers and bits of chalk than I can remember. Wouldn't dare go home and mention it as it would mean a proper caning, a thin bamboo one.

There was caning in the mid 80's in high school, but I never went to school in this country. It was a formal affair too, administered by the Dean of Discipline, witnessed by a member of office staff and a letter posted to the parents detailing the offence and number of strikes etc. Word was the pupil could refuse the punishment, but it would mean expulsion from school.

I had a total nutter as my form teacher back in the eighties, Montgomery was his name. He`d chalk GIT backwards on the sole of a shoe and then hit you across the arse with it in a different place each time. You`d know how many times you`d been whacked by counting how many GITs your arse was showing. The mad bd also took a run up as if he was Dennis Lillee or someone. Oh and after each stroke you had to shout "Stoke City for the Cup Sir" I kid you not.

I've replied "just the once" but I wasn't technically caned.

I still think it was bloody unjust (not unreasonable or assault or anything like that; just unfair). I was whacked a couple by the headmaster with a rubber gym-shoe for breaking his window with a football when I was in primary school (I think I'd have been about 8 or 9)

It was a complete accident; hence why I felt it was unjust but I guess I learned to be more careful in the yard after that!

I'm 51, and i was canned on my bum at first but later the school changed to the hands.

I must of been bad, but can't think how.

We used to have the cane at my schools - I was a regular recipient.

I als remember at primary school being hung on a hook by the hood of my jacket in the cloakroom by one of the teachers - can't remember what I did but I remember thinking that it was a bit out of order - the getting put on a hook, not what I did.

Caned, strapped or slippered; it depended on the teacher. The cane across the hand was painful for a few moments until the sting subsided. The strap across the arse hurt for longer but the history teacher used to chalk a big "D" on the sole of the slipper before leaving you with a nice brand on the arse of your trousers. That lasted a lot longer, along with the numbness.

ETA: There was also the usual assortment of rulers across the knuckles, blackboard rubbers, flying chalk etc.

I was caned about 5 times throughout secondary school, from '83 to '88.

No deterrent obviously and didn't actually hurt. I remember laughing at the headmaster on stage during school assembly as we were all lined up to be caned. He wasn't amused. smile

Our Teachers were sadistic bds, we had the cane across the hands, the slipper and the cricket bat across the arse, I had the punishment every week at least, my response was always the same "Thank you very much Sir" with a big smile, they hated that the sick bds.

How about being told to bend over, touch your toes and then be whacked across the arse with a cricket bat? Hurt? I nearly fainted. All for me and a mate trying to stab each other's plimsoled foot with blunt cricket stumps.

We didn't do it again though and watched out for other potential misdemeanours.

I don't think that's the lack of cane per se. I think that's the lack of any effective sanction at all, and of parental support when schools do act. That, and a health and safety culture which aims to protect children from ever discovering first hand that rash actions can have unpleasant consequences.

I was once fielding in a school cricket match when the guy at slip chucked the ball back to the bowler. Unfortunately for him the ball ttted the games teacher, who was umpiring, clean on the head. A stunned silence was rapidly followed by everyone pissing themselves. The games teacher grabbed a stump out of the wicket, chased after the poor chap, and proceeded to whack him round the arse with it. Legendary.

Caning was banned by the time I was at school.
We did however have a teacher who would regularly use the thin side of a wooden ruler across our hands.

Was of no use at all in improving our behaviour, the 'punishment' was dished out so randomly that it was clearly an outburst from her and not an attempt to teach any discipline.

This was in 1988/9 when I was 8.
