Archduke Franz Ferdinand was wearing a bullet proof vest made (partly) of silk when he was assassinated in June 1914.
The Japanese had silk armour long before this...it could deflect arrows.
Franz Ferdinand was shot in the jugular (above the vest) and died quickly. His assassination helped trigger WW1.
