I'd be very interested to go to Chernobyl. Let me know if anything comes of it Danny. There is something strangely facsinating about it all I think.

I think it said this summer, but being a bit of an obscure film might not get it everywhere, if anyone sees it playing anywhere, let me know! DannyScene said: Stiglet - Do you just do buildings or are there any good drainz in lincoln? (Got a bit of a sewer bug atm) Never done much draining, mostly buildings and RAF bases for me. Never seen much on our local club about them either so I don't think there is. There is underground tunnels apparently. Existance debatable.

Transmitter Man said: The wife is Ukrainian and when Chernobyl went south, she did too. As part of the former Soviet Union she moved to Yalta in the Crimea to get as far away from the fallout. She said after flying into Kiev you can hire a car for the circa 100kM drive but she did say if you visit even now you'll be glowing in the dark!Be careful - and you're not invited round here for breakfast Phil Wrong and wrong: You might be able to hire a car (although you'd be mad to - crazy crazy drivers!) - but you'll never get to Chernobyl with it - there is a 30km exclusion zone around it. If you want to do the tourist thing, there are trips you can arrange that start in Kiev and take you back there. If you visit there now - as long as you don't go wandering off, no significant risks (certainly not radiological ones!). I could post a video from last month (26th anniversary of the accident) where the Ukrainian president is doing a speech in front of the shelter (the local term for the sarcophagus) with worlds press and various diplomats watching on - all about 500m to the West of the shelter, no problem.

Isn't that one of the great things about PH? No matter how arcane the subject of discussion, somewhere on here is someone who works, lives or is an expert in that area! ETA in llewop's case, all three!

Robbie B said: Well this thread wasn't easy to find! I searched for exploring and abandoned and didn't find it so just had to trawl through my contributions. Here's 2 from last site, marginally pre-storm, of an abandoned construction site type thing. Just going back through the topic and these photos are awesome

At the risk of sounding like a risk-averse old fart, you need to be very very careful exploring drains and sewers at the moment. Water levels can go from a trickle to feet deep in less than a minute. The rain-fall we are seeing is dumping inches on the hills which, because the ground is so hard still, runs straight off into the sewers and drainage and flash floods the system giving you virtually no warning. That debris ball in the pic above shows you how much volume you get through that system.
Leave the exploring for after several days of dry weather with no rain predicted.

This image shows just how much water levels can vary (This is in no way my picture, I claim no rights tot his picture) bitflooded by dannyscene, on Flickr

Whilst I'm on here A) Stig, that place looks awesome! B) I did some research about places near me the other day and I stumbled across something interesting. There's a big forest near me that's on private land but not too difficult to get on (no houses/security or offices nearby). It's at the back of a disused war time runway and apparently inside this forest are still bomb shelters. I'm positively buzzing with excitement about trying to get in there. No one has got any pictures of inside yet. I just need the weather to buck up its ideas. I'll keep you chaps posted.
