I got told it was a BMP7 (IIRC) But i am no expert. It was definitely Russian is all I can say! Havent quite worked out why Russian tanks would me on a MOD/USAF site.

And yep there was two, both the same at the base in different places. But in different conditions, one we could get in the main hatch, the 2nd we could only get in via the drivers viewing bit (full of technical terms me)

They're amphibious too, or were, that one doesn't look like it'll be able to do much of anything.
I can't think why they'd be on an RAF site, that wikipedia page says that the US used some for training

* The PT-76 was used by the US Army for OpFor training. They were modified in a number of ways including the replacement of the engine with a caterpillar diesel engine, changing the turret hatch to a rear hinged arrangement and the fitting of US radios and antennae mounts. Due to the new engines different exhaust arrangements, the exhausts were rerouted to use the water-jet ports rather than the original engine exhaust.
but given that the hatch hinges forward, I'm guessing it's not one of them.
Has the base been used for anything since the MoD left?
I remember seeing an engineless T-34 for sale in a local paper a few years ago and that had been used by a paintballing place.
They were defintely not American, the markings on the dials and swithes would sugest Russian.

The one I.... ahem.... took was "Voda <------> Kopno"

I suspect that the ones the Americans had were captured in Vietnam, the Russians wouldn't have been very likely to have sold them any in the middle of the Cold War

Well its been quite a few years since the end of the cold war and once the Eastern Bloc started to fall apart a lot of this stuff was available on the open market. Also, a lot was bought back after the first Gulf war, most Military training areas are littered with the stuff.

Where is that?
Sarajevo, BiH.

There's a bit motorway between Chester and Ellesmere Port, IIRC, which kind of just ends/starts as if they meant to carry on at a later date but never got round to it. It is joined or left from slip roads, as if a junction rather than the end of the motorway. Anyone know where I mean?
Might be the end of the M56. You just come to a roundabout slightly abruptly. They've recently built some new dual carriageway round that way to bypass Deeside.

Some absolutely fantastic pictures and stories on here chaps. I spent around 2 hours in work yesterday looking through it all.

I've a friend of mine that does a bit of Urban Exploring so i'll try and get some pictures off him to post up on here at some point.

I just spent a couple of hours lookign through this thread, totally absorbing. I find the whole idea of dereliction fascinating but i'm not quite sure why! I get a really odd but addictive feeling inside, this feeling in strongest with the more recent buildings which are now derelict of those which have previously been particulalry grandiose or would have been very busy. I'm also fascinated by the idea that in each case the most recent owners must have decided we don't want to be here anymore and simply packed up and left a perfectly opperable building. Amazing for example that the lying saucer monument was new in the 80's but is now demolished, similarly the 80's winter olympics stuff. Anyone interested in more modern stuff that is derelict should look up abandoned leisure centre behind Buckmore Park kart track in Kent (google buckmore park derelict). This was build this millenium with lottery money and closed I think in 04 for financial reasons. Odd to see such a modern property derelict.

Also just googled the UFO Mcdonalds (previously called Megatron). It opened in 1990 and was pulled down in 08 having been derelict for some years. On a car orientated note, Evo mag did a feature on the old derelict 1990's bugatti factory which was very interesting and gave me the same feelings. Would LOVE to visit that place!

Rather a sad looking North American F100 Super Sabre; where's that then? Are those froggy markings?

I felt rather sad when I read this today; I have a strange affection toward 747s and always feel a twinge of sorrow when you see hundreds of them lined up, disused and waiting on airfields to be chopped up frown

Daily Wail says: "The gigantic 174,000 kg mass was reduced to a mountain of sheet metal by an excavator on wheels."
