I really need to get more Scottish brethren on this thread!

We visited Newcastle upon Tyne lodge 24 on Friday for their installation. Great day and night.

Am being initiated into Chapter next week.

I've been reassured "it'll be fun!"...

The word is "exalted", but you will be welcome and enjoy it none the less.

One of the photos on the unfortunate news of Paul Daniels caught my eye:

Don't think that's a Masonic collar, but rather Grand Order of Water Rats - see here http://www.gowr.net/Members/membersofthegran.html

Chaps, just how important is the belief in a higher power? I'm not about to pretend a belief in the supernatural or imaginary friends, but I might be prepared to concede that Chuck Norris is the creator.

That's what put me off when asked to join, I don't believe in a higher power.

Gents, I have some questions, obviously feel free to email if you'd prefer:

My dad would love me to join & I've been to a few social events so have a fair idea of what's involved howev
er, I'm time poor, don't have a great deal of disposable income and am a godless heathen.

As a newbie, can you join a lodge that meets 4-5 times per year or is a greater commitment required?
I work 5 mins from Gt Queen St so a London lodge would probably be more viable.

Can you give me a ballpark figure of how much membership costs?
All those raffles must add up?

How important is the god thing?
It's not like I combust if I go in a church or anything....

At my place....

We meet 9 times (other lodges meet 6, for example)

Subs are £200

The festive board (grub) for each meeting is £16

Collection in the temple for the almoners fund is whatever you want (everyone tends to drop £1 in)

Regalia (garb), I was given. If you have to buy, hmmm... £50?

To join, there are additional one off fees, I can't quite remember, but budget £150 maybe.

Timewise, it depends how involved you are, there are some lines to learn - they aint too hard.

Hope that helps.

Similar to the above figures.
Joining fee around £100 then £128 per year.
Ten meets a year and £13.50 for dinner, £1 in the charity bag and £5 raffle tickets (optional.)
While it is encouraged you can get as involved (or not) as you like. Saying that as with most things the more you put in the more you get out. It is not a problem missing meetings.

Is the Masonic similar to the Orange Order? Tons of Masonic members in NI are also members of the OO.

Last meeting of the year yesterday. Started to discuss appointments for next year and this rather unusual situation cropped up

I am staying on as WM as the chap who was going in the chair is recovering from major surgery and isnt yet 100%

Now the weird bit. The SD is having some problems so he may not want to go on to JW next year, likewise the JD.

So we are thinking if all the officers stay in the same positions as last year, can we cut out the appointments, and like the WM just 'proclaim' them or some such thing, also would we need to put in visiting Masters as SW/JW/IG?

Anyone got any ideas or had experience of this? It could well be the shortest Installation of all time!

Oh i might have to invest a steward, the first for about 16 years.
