i remember, even at the age of 6, that people with those space talking raleigh bikes were spoilt little C-words!! They were incredibly expensive, and there was no chance my parents were going to buy one for me... i think i knew even then that it was beyond a reasonable amount to spend.
I always found that the sort of kids with this kind of stuff had divorced parents.

£300 was a lot of cash for my parents back then. I also lusted after one of those bikes.
my parents definitely weren't skint but £300 for a kids' bike!!
How much was a Burner 'back in the day' then? that thing just looks like a BMX with a load of plastic tatt on it!
definitely <£100

With the stats the way they are you could say that nowadays, children with 2 eyeballs are 'statistically speaking' likely to have divorced parents.

For the record, my parents remained happily married until we lost my mom to cancer this time last year. there was certainly no emotional overcompensation going on, they just had enough money to buy me a nice bike without an ulterior motive.

Really?! I thought entry level (blue & red) Burners must have been £150 - £199 ish?!

But if that is the case that 'Striker' or what-ever it is (Strikers were black though werent they) is an expensive bike!

The Ultra Burner was £130 when new so a little less for a Super Burner

That does sound cheap - but then again I can't quite remember what £130 'really' was back in the early 80s.. I need to work on my nostalgia!

I agree with that. I was offered a Lotus Cortina for £1000 and then he dropped it to £800 for a quick sale. I tried but could not raise the money(!). Sounds daft now and kicking myself considering what they make these days,

Strikers were silvery/green IIRC. Weren't the XL bikes go faster black 'n red (Striker, Boxer, Grifter). My Little Bro had a Boxer XL. It looked good! Very '80s.

My mistake! I'm mixing up the names 'Striker' & 'Vektar'... someone I was friends with had a black Vekar.

It was a "Strika".
I had one in metallic pea. They had fake motorbike suspension springs on the front.

We had a totter call on our terrace in 1985 - my wife (country lass) had never seen the like. Was horse drawn too, but disappeared from that manor within a year iirc.

Today one of our neighbours will leave sundry tat (usually with a metal element) on the pavement, and it disappears as if by majik.

When's the last time you saw a gas fire in someone's living room (not a 'real flame pseudo log crapola')? We had one in the terrace (as above) - never put it on full as it became too hot in the house! Please note - your answer may be used against you in the council thread.

Must be showing my age here but first thing I thought when I saw that image was the daisy wheel printer.

I think Strikers were aslo available in a mustard colour as well; Boxers were red and Grifters were black. I had a Speedway.

There was a definite bike hierarchy: Budgie was the botom rung, then the Strikers/Boxers et el; branching off you had Tomahawk which progressed to the Chopper. If you didn't go down that route you ended up with the Grifter. Then BMXs came along and it was game over. A mate still has his Black and Gold Raleigh Super Tuff Burner [sic] with original black mags in his shed. They look so tiny now.

There were two styles.
For the easy rider: Budgie - Tomahawk - Chipper - Chopper
For the scrambler: Boxer - Strika - Grifter
