Budget is very important - ie as cheap as possible. Will be renting.

Commutable within 20/30 mins.

1 bed/studio flat preferably modern but not necessarily (maybe even professional houseshare at a push)

NOT in Chavganistan!

I'll only be there midweek (it's a contract opportunity) so will be home at the weekends.

Go!

Colnbrook?

Windsor? But quite pricey

Bracknell? On the edge of your commute distance..

datchet or windsor
virginia water and ascot are both nice as well

most other surrounding places you'll just get stabbed and your car will get torched

NEVER skimp on area

To be fair I have no idea about this end of the country - so can we quantify the "why's" as well please?

Cheers!!

Wokingham, Earley, Lower Earley, Woodley - all 25 mins away and fine places to live. Though staying in Slough will be cheaper....its not like its your home for life, just a base.

Maidenhead, Woburn Green, Stoke Poges, the Farnhams for north of the M4 or Windsor, Old Windsor, Englefield Green, Winkfield for south. A lot depends on how you aim to commute?

Rule of thumb:

1. If it is a town on the Thames, it will probably be quite nice but expensive.

2. If it is a town on the main trainline into Paddington, it will probably be quite nice but expensive.

3. If it has easy access to the M4, it will probably be quite nice, but expensive.

4. Except Slough, which is a hole.

Parts of Maidenhead are OK, Marlow is nice, as is Henley. (All IMO. Flame suit on.)

I don't know how I'll commute - probably car initially but I have a bike as well so could filter past traffic. My instinct tells me west of Slough as it'll be closer to home. Possibly Maidenhead/Burnham?

Maidenhead, because it's called Maidenhead.

Or Windsor, because of Legoland.

When I did use to work in Slough, I lived out west near to the M4 J7 on the fringes of Burnham and Cippenham - close enough to the former to be a nice peaceful part of the world, close enough to the latter not to be hideously expensive.

Quite a few rental apartments in that area, so you ought to be able to find something decent, though whether it fits your budget is another matter. But as has been said above, you don't want to skimp on location if you can afford not to.

Wokingham is definitely not an option if you are trying to keep costs down,

I would suggest Bracknell or Maidenhead personally, they are both "in the middle towns" in a sense of crime/nice area.

Another vote for Maidenhead ... Henley would be quite a commute to Slough, as well as expensive house price wise! Marlow is closer, but again, expensive!

Beaconsfield, Hazelmere, Bourne End and the like. High Wycombe itself has some nice areas but a few relativly dodgy ones as well but the recently redone town centre is quite nice.

Don't go to Datchet, the plane noise is horrendous.

Slough is right out, for obvious reasons.

Maidenhead is alright, there are nice parts.

Windsor is lively but expensive.

Bracknell is awful.

All in all, for a week time crash pad in a decent location that's going to be easy to get to and from, I'd say Burnham.

Find a job somewhere else.

I worked in Slough on a contract on the sewage works there, right by the M4 and I must say it was the best part of Slough. The local swimming pool is worse than the tanks at the works. The nightlife is atrocious, the local Travelodge is one of the worst I've stayed in (apart from the Reading M4 ones).

Seriously, get out while you can

yes

Or Notting Hill. Hugh Grant lives there, so it must be nice.
