Since we aren't doing "known" people I can't mention the chap who warned the Krays to not venture into the North East or face the consequences.

They didn't funnily.

That's true. There are a few bodybuilding photos that are probably nsfw or would mean I'd be accused of having the ghey.

There's a story that the Krays were sent packing in Manchester by the Quality Street Gang when they arrived on a train at Piccadilly Station. A lot of people say it is bullst though as they wouldn't travel by train normally and they weren't interested in anywhere outside London. I would assume that would apply to the North East too.

One of the locals in a pub I used to work at was a gypsy bareknuckler, lovely bloke, wouldn't say boo to a goose normally but sometimes you would get a non-local gypsy turn up and have a go, he was scary once he went you just closed up and waited for the police to come down and help you clear up.

Every town and city has this story, even Frankie Fraser says on his website if he had a quid every time someone told that story he'd be rich.

bartley gorman's book is well worth a read. he was the former king, some of the fights he describes are truly horrendous.

Judging by the number of pictures of men with their shirts off in this thread, we are well into Gayland.

Reflect for a minute everyone.

You are now in a thread with lots of pictures of men with their shirts off.

In Gayland.

Or even George Cornell. I used to work the pubs and clubs when it was all cash in hand no questions asked, saw some small men mad things and saw some big men shy away because they didn't was their faces marked and just were on the doors to look good to the ladies. So I would say you just can't tell , as the saying " it's not the size of the dog in the fight it's the size of the fight in the dog".

That story even featured lately in Shameless, with Frank Galagher claiming he was there smile

Cant believe know one has mentioned the hardest nutter of all.

Lenny Mclean aka the Guv'nor.

His autobiography is well worth a read. The man was mental.

IMO a "hardman" must have not only have the physical skills but the hard edge - the cold, ruthless attitude and savage, animalistic presence to go with it. I personally don't think MMA fighters like Bisping or Hardy, or David Haye, fit the bill as they are too clean-cut and clearly highly intelligent, cerebral even. Gangsters are a good choice, and the likes of the Guvnor and Roy Shaw also are good shouts as they represent the dual mystique of '60s gangland and bare-knuckle prizefighting.

My pick? Lee Murray. Hardly someone to be lionised given his violent crimes, but you can't argue with his credentials: world-class MMA fighter, £53m bank robber, owner of a London security firm and (if you believe the stories) the uncrowned king of the streets back in the day.

Correct. Being a hard man isn't all about being handy in a punch up. It's more about not thinking twice about using extreme violence or torturing your opponents, and having no fear whatsoever of the consequences.

Nelson then - or maybe Bomber Harris.

For some reason I have read through this thread, mainly as I am bemused with the question "Why? - who cares?". There's the homo-erotic stuff I suppose, most of the people here I have never heard of and those I have are people I have no respect for at all - them or their life-style. What's to admire?

My vote goes to Andrew Sheridan, the England loosehead prop. He's nearly 6 foot 5, 18 stone and can bench press 500lbs.

I have been in locations where self-proclaimed-hard-man-east-end-friend-of-the-Crims-and-Stars-"Dodgy" Dave Courtney is in residence. Surrounded by his gang...scrawny aggressive white 17-20yr old wannabe hardmen intimidating others and making Dave look "hard". Maybe surrounding themselves with young men may actually be the only way these guys get hard.
Dave can certainly handle himself, or at least, used to, but I fear 'fame' has gotten to his head.

Some of the others in the group he hung around with before his 'fame' are proper nutters, and have done some very nasty things in their time.

I have first hand knowledge of this, and wouldn't mess or upset any of them if you paid me a significant sum of money...
