Rim fire (modern day) generally applies to .22 calibre in its many forms. Centre fire normally refers to all calibres above. And sometimes below just to confuse you further... smile Generally rim fire is low power.
That explains it, I assumed it just referred to whether the firing pin hits the centre of the cartridge or the rim. Admittedly all the .22 rifles I've fired have been rim fire and all the .303s centre fire.
No, your assumption is the correct one.

Rim fire, by the name, is when the primer is contained within the rim of the case and the firing pin strikes the rim edge as you correctly say.

Centre-fire is when the firing pin strikes a separate primer inserted in the centre of the base of the case.

.22 bolt action and L98 in the ATC.

.22 bolt action and an underlever repeater I can't remember at a shooting club I was a member of. Maybe a .357?

And a shotgun once as a yoof.

I used to shoot alot when I was younger with my dad.

357 Magnum
Various Single/Double Barrel Shotguns
Pumpaction shotgun
.177 & .22 air rifles (spring/compressed air)

Should have taken the opportunity to shoot some when I went to Orlando recently.
