I think that all those who complain about lack of bonus should get together and start their own company.
+1

I won't complain about a lack of bonus. Somehow I'm 2 1/2 years into a job where I get a bonus every quarter (not a lot, but it helps), and a few months was absolutely floored when I was one of 3 people who actually got a pay rise (in a section with a few hundred staff).

On the negative side, I work with a bunch of mildly incompetent buffoons who would try the patience of a saint.

Let me guess? You work in IT. What if you don't? How does contracting work then?
Yes - I work in IT.

Contracting works the same in any industry - whether there is demand is a different matter.

Contracting, freelance, self employed, consultancy - all pretty much the same dog washed.

I never suggested leaving before finding another job. It's quite simple. Find new job, leave old one. Who's talking of unemployed periods?

Loving the corprate answer - get a new job then...

Where was that created? On the tricky par 5 hole 9?

Staff just want the odd bit of praise when they do things correct. Is it really so hard for you management toffs, drivng about in your new sports cars just say, thanks for doing xxxx or i see you stayed late last night, cheers mate i appreicate that...

What? I'm not management but I have no time for whingers. No it's not hard for management to show their appreciation but as I see you have 4 options.

1) Speak directly to your management about it.

2) Find another job, then leave.

3) Moan about it on an internet discussion board.

4) STFU and take it up the arse.

hmm, so i do one of those options...

1 - defeats the object completely. So i go speak to the boss, can you thank me for my efforts last month/year? or say to them, can you recognise me for my work more often? Yeah, good option hey...

2 - I'm always on the lookout to better myself

3 - I am

4 - i do

Do you not like to be recognised or appreciated for doing something well? Perhaps you've always excelled at everything you've done and never felt the need to be told 'thanks' or 'good work', perhaps your constantly working at 120%...

Of course I like to be appreciated, everyone does but the point I'm trying to make is, if you feel undervalued, go somewhere they will value your skills. Excelled? Me? They're lucky if they get 20% out of me! BTW more than 100% is not possible.

All that hard work and all you really needed to do to get a bonus was write a poem about your gay colleague called Grant.

I recently had an appraisal at my work and got a extremely high score, one of the best in the company, my boss actually described me as amazing. I nearly fell out of my chair as I sometimes really struggle with aspects of my job and am constantly pushed out of my comfort zone.

When he asked I had any questions, I asked for a payrise, he just laughed at me...

So what do I get for my hard work over the last year, a small bonus, a bottle of wine, employee of the month? Nope more responsibility, which is written into my job description, when i asked what im getting out of it im told "skill development"

Thats a really good motivator isnt it...
I'm lucky that I now work in a place where the boss expects very high standards etc but we are better paid than many in my field, she is good and acknowledging a job done well and recently was offering £50 reward for ideas that benefited work. I love working too the high standard for own pride anyway but it makes it so much better when you have an appreciative boss.

Concentrate on those skills and take pride in your own work and the fact that they have recognised your efforts even if they are not actually rewarding you in a monetry/ bonus way. Those skills will offer a wider choice if you want to move on later.
Your a manager arent you?
I was a head veterinary nurse for a few years and trained several students but not really a manager. Plus I was always very careful to notice good work etc, I had no control over salaries/ bonuses but I always tried to support the nurses to the bosses re: this sort of thing if I could.

what about the many, many nights the people who set the company up in the first place spent, the result of which was opportunities for people like you? What about the months/years of having no income whatsoever the same people had to endure the result of which was opportunities for people like you? What about the risk the same people took, more than likely with their own homes and families, the result of which was opportunities for people like you?

When was the last time to said thanks to those who risked so much in order to give you the opportunity to work in the comapany?

Have a think about the extra odd few hours you put in and also about why you're lucky enough to be in a position to actually do a late night once in a while.

Sure they will get what seems a big reward compared to you butthey put in a hell of a lot more than you could imagine to build the company and they're in a position now to decide who gets what and quite rightly so.

I've worked for that MD.....

Always appreciated the team effort and rewarded alike, not cash btw.

He sold out to a PLC, they couldn't give two stes.

I respect people who have done as you've posted, dosen't mean they have the right to treat people like ste.

As above has just replied, doesn't mean you have to treat like ste. If you want staff to go the extra bit more, just treat them like humans, when you have quiet periods, perhaps chat to your staff on their level about their intrests, and perhaps then when you need them to up their efforts they are more open to do it without a financial incentive.

This isn't rocket science. Fair play, the original founder of the company i work for probably put in a lot of effort, hes not alive anymore. I'm fairly sure most of the managers who make up the board of directors didn't expose themselves to the same sort of financial risks that the original founder did and they've been in a similar position to what i'm in when they first started here, what i dont get is why they haven't learnt from that and treat staff with a bit of gratitude and respect.

I thank my employers every appraisal so once a year.

Depends where about on the ladder you are. If you're near the bottom I'd consider that a good thing as the next time the chance at promotion comes up you'll have that little extra over anyone else that's going for it. That's when you'll get your payrise.
That assumes your company's reasonable.

I'd only give you about 60% for that rant. Good swearing but over use of fk without enough , st, bks or anything innovative like wktastic or st-sniffer.

Your KPIs for next quarter will be to use at least 6 different profanities in your rant, and additionally one made up insulting description of someone.

Yes, all the time. But I find the best solution is to get rid of those staff concerned before their scepticism spreads. winkbiggrin
