Bit of an odd one here.

I'm after a winter jacket and have made a bit of a 'shortlist'. Ideally something I can get a few years wear out of. I don't mind paying good money for a good jacket the will last. The usual offerings from Barbour, Belstaff, North Face don't tickle my fancy.

I don't know too much about (designer) clothes and have never really looked at this type of thing before.

I was in a local menswear shop at the weekend and found a great Stone Island jacket for half the RRP. I assume it is last seasons (no biggy for me). Tried it on, it felt great. Lovely materials and styling.

I mentioned it to a few mates who seem to know a little bit about menswear, or at least I think they do. We were discussing it and the general consensus was "great brand, great clothing but too much baggage attached to the name".

I had considered this but didn't know it was so widely thought. By "baggage" I assume they mean the association with football violence and hooliganism.

I guess my question is, are these jackets only for hoodlums and weekend warriors or do people who just like a nice piece of clothing wera them?

It will generally be worn to and from work and occasionally on a weekend if I leave the house in the Winter months. I wouldn't be wearing it every weekend on the terraces or to the pub on a Saturday.

If it will 'provoke trouble' with my peers everytime I wear it, I'll just leave it. It's a jacket at the end of the day, not an open invitation for a rumble in the jungle.

Thanks,

Plotloss

I have a Ted Baker parka that I bought 4 years ago, in khaki green. Is incredibly thick, very warm and has definitely had its use, both as a second winter jacket when snowboarding and as a general jacket when im out and about in the winter months. Was £320 when new, but its coming up for it's 5th winter and still just as good as the day I bought it.

Nothing wrong with Stone Island, and I don't know why people get so funny about certain brands. It won't provoke an attack or anything of that kind, unless you plan on hiding a sawn-off in the lining. Buy it for what you want it for. If you like it then get it, it's not down to anyone else.

The same could be said about any brand that has been around for 30+ years.

Thanks for your input though.

Stone Island clothes are lovely but serious ££££

Too much £££ for what they are IMO, but nice nevertheless.

They do have an association with football hooliganism, much like a lot of designer clothing has in the past.

But you won't get beaten up for wearing it. Unless you associate with football hooligans near football stadiums?

Just buy it and wear it if you like it. You'll be fine.

Not really.

Stone Island particularly, is the uniform of the football hooligan.

But it's cheap, so do crack on.

Nobody has ever asked my opinion on football.

That's all I have to say about that.

I have loads of Stone Island jackets and coats, and I'm not a thug.

It is associated with certain people, but you will find 9 time out of 10 those people are the ones that are buying the obvious copies from eBay. I do get the piss taken out of me by a few friends but even they admit the quality and design of some of the pieces is excellent. If you like the jacket, but not the brand you can always take the badge off, also have a look at CP Company which is basically the same brand.

I honestly love the brand, and have a limited edition jacket from nearly every year, which is starting to really annoy my wife.

I have a Stone Island man bag that I picked up in TK Maxx one day. They make some nice stuff but not my style.

Its clearly not cheap....£500-£1000 on a coat is not cheap in anyones eyes.

Badges and logos are the last things on my list when buying clothes, in my view they spoil a garment and I won't wear anything with them on. On one or two occasions I've even picked or cut them off.

Problem solved. You get the jacket you want without whatever connotations the label brings.

I think he may have meant the styling.

I don't own any SI stuff as it's generally the dealers that wear them around here. Not meaning to label the brand as thuggy type but I haven't seen many other types wearing them tbh.

Shame as they used to make some nice stuff.

£1000 on ANY item of clothing is ludicrous.

Let's assimilate and re-direct this thread.

Any recommendations from the nay-sayers out there?

As previous, 'farm / country wear' isn't my thing and everyone wears it round here.

My local on a weekend is a sea of quilted jackets.

What did you think of the Valencia game?

Well done sir. You smashed your tumescent football question right through his metaphorical hymen.

I wear the odd Stone Island coat, I am into my football and I was convicted several years ago on a football related charge (big thanks to the stitch up by West Yorks police for that one)

Personally Stone Island is now in the domain of chavs and hoolie wannabes and there is a load of snide stuff around so its lost its appeal amongst the casual faternity. But you could take the arm badge off I guess then it just looks like a normal jacket.

Look at CP Company, Mount Blanc, Flahvern and Malestrom.

Jog on soppy bks!
