Another epic site.
Well that was just one of the best and most mind blowing, brain hurting but enjoyable things I've read in awhile!
Then whatever you do, don't read this... http://waitbutwhy.com/2015/01/artificial-intellige...

It made me very very small, and rather insignificant.....

Awesome website - I even signed up for their newsletter.

I'm leaving work in a moment but will finish it at home but my brain is already aching (love it though!)

This statement made me go "woah, good point" hehe

..If I tell you, later in this post, that you may live to be 150, or 250, or not die at all, your instinct will be, “That’s stupid—if there’s one thing I know from history, it’s that everybody dies.” And yes, no one in the past has not died. But no one flew airplanes before airplanes were invented either.."

Hopefully this one hasn't already been posted:

A very clever guy by the sound of it, but responsible for enormous damage to the environment (and himself)

You guys would love the SciFi of Alastair Reynolds. Not only does he have an explaination for the Fermi paradox, he also has a group of humans living on Mars who, once quantum computing becomes a reality, modify their own brains with AI and becomming suprahuman.

Is this what you're talking about? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Revelation_Space_univ...

If so, I'm definitely going to investigate his stuff - sounds awesome.

He does do space opera well. Different to Iain M Banks, but good. Revelation Space is a good starter for him.

That's the guy. Revelation Space is the first full novel he wrote and it's a bit dry in places. However he is an actual scientist, and his writing gets noticibly better throughout the series. Hjs shkrt stories are all pretty good too.

Still miss Iain Banks. New culture novels were one of the things I lived for as a kid. frown

Ah, I should have asked being a big fan of Iain M Banks.

I love guys like this - I'm in awe of them and somewhat pleased they make me feel rather unimaginative and dumb. I mean, wouldn't it be rubbish if you were never challenged to think bigger and harder because there was no reason to.

Great thread, kept me occupied for a lot of time (when I should have been working). One from me, spotted on Blacklist and thought it must be made up for TV but it's either true or they faked a wiki page for it, I give you the immortal jellyfish:

The definition you use for the word 'interesting' is very loose.

"Minister for Child Protection Beverley Hughes described the show as "unspeakably sick" but later admitted she had not seen the episode; likewise, Home Secretary David Blunkett said that he was "dismayed" but had also not seen the episode, because he was on holiday in Majorca at the time and is blind."
