I thought I knew a fair bit about WWII.
Never realised both the British and Russians invaded Iran.

The 1966 Aberfan Disaster - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aberfan_disaster
Just a few months after that win at the World Cup up pops this appalling tip slide. There's some interesting details - because the event was remote from t'pit there was not a legal reason to even report it to the factories inspector, and when it came to removing the other five pits the NCB took £150k from the survivors fund as a contribution.
The then Chairman of the NCB didn't attend the site for 48 hours - first he went ahead with his investiture as chancellor at Surrey University on the very day, then mislead the official enquiry some month's later.

Also always wanted to know what was in this - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kaaba there's a video of young guy walking round it with his phone - doesn't seem very, well respectful.
There's a character in Iain Banks' novel The Business who wants to make a movie out of the idea that the black meteorite is actually an alien escape pod. downthepub said:

Cracking thread this, it's passed most of my week!
I'm particularly interested in the cold war era so plenty here to keep me amused!
My (probably humble) addition; http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Almaz - I knew the Russians had Mir but didn't realise they had another 'lab'. I particularly like the fact it was equipped with a cannon!

I was working out in Gib when that happened. I was staying at big hotel in the centre, and suddenly all hell broke loose! Police sirens from all over. Lots of troops running around the dock yard. It was only in the evening watching the news we found out what had happened. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Flavius
