Everytime I visit this thread I seem to buy something.

30 Feather blades. £9.45 delivered.

Now I need a recommendation on aftershave balm, I've been using a Hugo Boss balm that came in a christmas gift recently and it's starting to run out.

Nivea AS balm is a great cheap option at £5.
Proraso liquid AS cream with green tea & oatmeal is fantastic stuff & can be had for about £12.
Both are very good value for money.

I rarely use any kind of aftershave unless I know I'm going to be out in the sun, then I use something with protection. Favourite is Real Shaving Co. stuff.

Damn this interesting thread! Been using Gillette for years and am 5 blades vibrator at moment... Not any more. Just about to mortgage the house for the next set of replacement blades when I found this lot! Now have merkur 34c on the way with some free Derby blades and other bits! Looking forward to getting this 4 day old stubble off if it arrives today! I can see this getting expensive in the short term. Need something to hold them all in now. And a decent brush. And some aftershave balm. And a different selection of blades....

Go easy with the Derbys - not renowned for their sharpness, and allied to a new razor and possibly less than effective technique you might find more than your stubble disappearing laugh

I don't think you can generalise about Derbys. I bought a thousand of the buggers a few years ago, after a good experience with the first couple of packs I bought. Only to find that you get good packs and not so good ones. If I open a duff pack now, I just bin all of them in that pack and try another one. Knowing what I know now, I wouldn't buy them again, but the point is Papman might be lucky and get a good packet.

So the advice to a new DE user be cautious was reasonably well-founded, perhaps?

Doesn't that go without saying? All I'm saying is that if carnage ensues, it might not be the Derbys to blame.

I tried Derby's once. I would have done less damage to my Chevy Chase if i'd shaved with my lawnmower.

Persona Platinums are my choice of blades.

The good thing with DE shaving is that all the blades are cheap so its easy to try lots of different ones to find one you get on with.

Probably bears re-statement to a new user, wouldn't you say - cf the two posters underneath...

I wouldn't bother. I should say I've never used an adjustable, but I've never felt the need to either. I have a Mühle R89 - basic, but very good. Cheap too. I've been using it for a couple of years now.
I like the look of this one, I have rather large hands so quite fancy the larger size.

Although this is a lovely looking one - more than I really want to spend, though.

Yeah will be careful with the Derby blades. Heard mixed views on them, but I will try them carefully! Have ordered a mixer set of 22 variety blades included the Gillette ones every one seems to like. Will try the persona as well - are they the ones at Asda or have I misunderstood that? Shaving cream arrived today and DE tomorrow. Exciting times!

Just had a lovely shave with my Gillette Black Beauty.

How do others have their adjustable razors set? I only shave maybe twice a week and find the most aggressive setting works well.
You know not to adjust your razor settings when it's tightened on the blade?

I'm sure you do - just wouldn't want you to damage your toy. smile
I do thanks NDA smile

I really love the razor and would recommend a Gillette adjustable to anyone interested in DE shaving.

My razor used to be my Father's so it also has sentimental value to me. smile

The Muhle razors look very nice.

As a DE beginner should I really be going for adjustable?

I may have to eat my words here.
Still not tried an adjustable but have swapped the head as per above - quite a bit more aggressive than the standard head but a way closer shave. Probably good that I've been DE for a couple of years though, may've been a tad too aggressive for my early days. hehe
Planning on using the new head week days and the standard for weekends - maybe an adjustable would be a better bet but will try this for now.

Derby blades leave me with terrible rash always. Binned them.

Here's my take on blades just buy feathers. They work best in any of my razors sharp so cut easily and no irritation.

There are other good blades rapira platinum comes close but nothing matches feathers so why bother with anything else.

I have a lifetimes supply if blades but when the feathers go ill order more.

Razors are good to experiment with I just don't see the point in experimenting with blades anymore. I've found the best

Well first shave done. Five days stubble which is alot on my face! Shower, hot flannel, several minutes of lather then attacked with my merkur 34c which arrived in the post today. Then repeated for a second pass. Felt and smelt lovely as I shaved. Will be easier without that much stubble in future I am sure. Not a single nick so must be an expert already... Blade was the free one with it merkur jobby. Will be trying the new free Derby blades next. Then hopefully my selection pack arrives... One question though. I have been using nivea after shave balm for years. It stung a little today for the first time. Is this normal? Not a problem if so, but maybe I need a different higher quality face feed?! Thoughts appreciated.
