Multi-blade razors
Discussion
well if you got on alright with the merkur blade you should be ok with a derby. Merkur are the worst blades out there IMO toaly useless.
Just buy some feathers. And of course buy some expensive after shave balm.
I linked a good cheapish one up the page a bit. but there are plenty of others

Randomly wandered into this thread for the first time a few days ago and look what you've made me do
I've got a 5 week old beard that's now getting on my nerves so it's going on the weekend.
Dived straight in, Parker shavette and a Merkur HD34c. What could possibly go wrong.
Do I need a Dexter style kill room for my first attempt?

I may have to eat my words here.
Still not tried an adjustable but have swapped the head as per above - quite a bit more aggressive than the standard head but a way closer shave. Probably good that I've been DE for a couple of years though, may've been a tad too aggressive for my early days.
Planning on using the new head week days and the standard for weekends - maybe an adjustable would be a better bet but will try this for now.

Yeah I agree probably better to start with a less aggressive head first.

Yeah I put all my others away and been solely using it. Last brush I'd ever needed.
Can't get another like it. Just ordered another Neep one. Only had one for sale and it looked unusual with a dollop of hematite in it.
Hope I don't find it in the bottom of a bag now.

Just browsing the TZ for sale forum and came upon this
Now that's bloody gorgeous.

I've just realised that this thread was originally about those crap plastic multi-blade razors that Gillette flog to the masses along with horrid gunk they expect people to actually put on their face!
I wonder when a six bladed razor will come along?

What would be a good DE razor to start with? Preferably new.
I believe most people start out with the Wilkinson Sword Classic Safety RazorYou can pick them up very cheaply at Boots along with some soap and a brush. If you don't get on with I is a cheap way of finding out its not for you. If you like it its a stepping stone into more expensive gear.
I just had a week off work and thought I should shave my 7 day beard. My usual multi-blade razor kept getting clogged so dug out my basic kit as above. Worked great, never felt the need to upgrade.
You realise you made me get off the settee and go upstairs
Ok quick dirty pics light fading
Other side with hematite and the red staining in the stone
Apparently the stone was so hard he gave up trying to turn it at one point then came back with different tools.

It's still damp there. I used it earlier. Quite different to the last one but this is his super silver tip badger I think. Made a very thick lather that thick that I changed the blade I thought it was blunt. It's going to take some getting used to just because of the size of the handle. Knot is perfect.
No not found the last one
The question is do I take this one away with me. I m in Brighton for four days soon.

It's been quiet lately so a couple things from me.
After reading NDAs praise for the Slim I bought a very nice condition one for not a lot. First shave tonight, set to five with a rapira blades and rightly impressed. I have been playing with my Weber arc for a while and just sticking with changing one thing at a time, so a nice change for a different razor.
One thing I would recommend is to use skin food under your shaving soap/pre shave. Made a great difference to my shave through a greater slickness. Reduced the little nicks to none in a fortnight.
