Anybody? Please....going round in circles!

I'm looking at Parker 99R or some Merkur's but not sure which Merkur to getconfused

Also blades, I won't be shaving every day so don't mind paying a slightly higher price for a better blade. Looking at Feather & Wilkinson...but again not sure which to go for. Brush I'll use what I've got for now and get something better on pay day smile

Erm have you looked at the last post on the bottom of the previous page?
I wouldn't have thought looking back 1 page would be too taxing if you really are desperate for advice.

Both those makes will be fine, the blades are probably more important once you have a razor you like. I prefer the Gillette 7 o'clock but plenty will disagree.
Get anything and practice technique before you stress too much about hardware.
It's a personal, learning experience. Enjoy!

Yes... but then I popped into town and saw a couple in the shop, but the guy wasn't that great giving advice wink Even mentioned the ones in your post wink
Same with blades, asked about feather blades and got a blank stare!

Thanks, I've seen some sample packs for sale with a few different brands so might give them a shot.

Thanks mate I'll take another look at the EJ89 smile

Do you get any benefit over these types vs the Parker where the top opens up? Or is it more of a gimmick?

Ultimately it's about weight, size, profile of head and that ickle gap where blade meets head. I don't think the way the blade loads is particularly relevant, so I think that's just personal preference.

I recommended the EJ as its just so medium in all respects (in a good way!) and cheap enough to be a trial razor if needs be. Wish I'd gone with it first - but I'd still have hankered after others, I'm sure...

Parker TTO's are supposed to be pretty mild. The butterfly opening is supposed to make changing the blade less risky as opposed to taking a 3-part to bits, balancing the blade on the top cap, re-assembling....
I would advise against starting out with a too mild razor like a Timor or Parker, as I think they can lead to bad habits such as adding pressure.
The Jagger DE89/Muhle R89 are moderate aggressive razors, meaning neither mild nor aggressive.

Cool!! Quick one before I pounce on paypal again, does '89' mean a specific style of razor as Muhle & Edwin Jagger both sell 89 razors confused

Sorry for the noob questions here guys! It's all a bit new to me..

The 89 is the head design that both manufacturers were involved in.
I'd get a sample pack of blades or failing that just buy some Personna Platinum Chromes to use with your Muhle. They're a comfortable and forgiving blade.

Is there anywhere decent to get the sample packs from (what brands to look out for/reputable sellers)

Just need the blades, bowl & bumper pack of plasters now smile

And just to prove how individual and subjective it is I find the Platinums profoundly uncomfortable and plain unsharp with the same headconfused

Plenty of choice there! Thanks everyone for the advice, much appreciated cool

I've just bought a cheap bowl off ebay to tie me over until I get a decent stand, brush & bowl on pay day smile

Really looking forward to this now! I've been using decent cream & a brush for years but with a Gillette multi blade razor!
