Random question here - is there such a gadget that would fit on the end/sides of a razor cartrige to lift it fractionally away from the face? Thus allowing a dry-razor style control over stubble length?
At the minute I wet-shave, so keep having to go in a cycle from clean-shaven, through ideal 2 day's stubble, to plain-scruffy looking. I'd like to maintain a constant light smattering of stubble, but I do not like using dray shavers - and I certainly am not going to stump up the thick end of 100 quid for a decent one when a wet razor is a few quid!

I'm assuming the answer is no, as the whole point of a wet blade is that it is in contact with the skin.... but I'd be happy to be proved wrong!

Well I've found the alum block quite nice on the cheeks but stings like buggery round the neck. I guess thats down to poor shaving technique. I think I'll reduce to one pass from three and see if that changes things. Tend to just dab the block with loo roll to dry it off then straight back in the card box for storage.

Nivea Aftershave Balm. Highly rated but I don't think it's that great. Really really watery and doesn't give the finish or feel I was expecting. I just end up with a wet face again.

DE89L and Silvertip brush arriving today, looking forward to trying them out.

No need to blot the alum block, just leave to air dry.

Once alum is rinsed from face it's rarely necessary to ponce about use balms unless for a specific reason. If I know I'm going to be in the sun for long stretches I use one with SPF, though generally I prefer to be fresh and clean with no slop.

I'm hoping there's a couple beardy guys on here like me?

What are you using for beard conditioner? I've got a pretty thick beard and very course hairs, I've been using normal shampoo & conditioner the towel drying it and adding Moroccan Oil to soften it a bit and does slightly but still had a course feel to it.

Trying to get it nice & soft like it feels after I dye it smile

Other news....3 blades down & tried out, and onto Gillette Silver Blue tomorrow smile

I have a feeling that the composition of the Nivea balm has changed in the last year or two. It used to be excellent, but now, as you say, it's too watery.

As an experiment, I've ordered a couple of the Queen Charlotte Soaps aftershave balms (ok, 3, as they're not expensive), included the iced key lime that uses as much menthol as they use in the vostok cream and balm. Could be amusing.

I've started to use their shaving cream in the shower; works nicely as the heat softens it up a treat.

As for the alum block, I just let mine air dry.

Massdrop have another group buy on an iKon razor currently, if anyone is interested.

Where's the best place to pick up an assortment of blades? Connaught?

They are fine, but consider just buying a couple of types to try. I think a large choice doesn't really help. Get Feathers and pick some other popular blade at random.

They're for Christmas stocking fillers. I'm going to give all the men in my immediate family a DE razor, assortment of blades, a brush and some soap/palmolive cream to get them to make the switch.

This. Feather and Personna back to back will cover the best options.

Strewth. A little goes a loooong way with menthol. Possibly the only lime shaving accessory that actually captures the bitterness of limes 100% - thoroughly recommended. But go easy on it - Jim, through a veil of tears.

Bluebeards Revenge shaving cream takes a bit of beating. Very little goes a long way and easily three passes from one brush.

I have avoided bluebeards stuff as I used an aftershave balm that was horrible. It left a greasy layer on my face and needed to be washed off.

I've started using the Taylor of Old Bond Street Sandalwood Shaving Cream instead of Mühle's aloe vera shave soap - the difference is impressive. Much better lather, no irritation and a much smoother shave overall. I've also just finished using my sample pack of Shark stainless blades and thought they were excellent - very sharp and lasted several shaves.

Ouch! fking ouch.

So using feathers for years and just shaved and cut my self silly. Fresh blade, on the lightest setting. Could it be a bad blade?

Done all the usuals, hot water on face etc.

I'm also out of feathers, is there anything else to try that's light for my soft baby face?

Nicked myself a few times today with a fresh feather. I think its more to do with the cream though, I used GFT Rose and it doesn't lather up that great, had no problems with the Bluebeards revenge for a fortnight. The Rose felt like it was drying up fast.
