Am I right to assume that the Mühle R89 and EJ DE89 variations are the same razor/head design but with slightly different handles?

ETA Can anyone confirm they have the same thread?

Yes the R89 & DE89 are the same head.

I go for 3 shaves per blade - one pass each morning and change after three days.

Never tried flipping the blade, may give that a go.

2, if that, off a Feather. Sharp but not durable, at least in my hands.

I'm much the same - rarely more than 3.

So this...

And a few of these....

Would be a good start? Will any of the double edge razor blades on that website fit?

Thanks guys.

My Merkur and accoutrements arrived today, the first thing that I noticed is that the handle is tiny! I guess that the technique is different so it shouldn't be too alien though... hopefully!

I see what people mean about the smell of Arko too, it is very lemony, in an almost urinal-toilet puck way. I have some Taylors of Old Bond Street Sandalwood soap as well, so I'm sure I can switch up if required. The alum block is tiny as well, I almost expected it to be bar of soap sized but I guess a little goes a long way.

So, chances of a blood-letting on the weekend? I've been wet shaving for about 8/9 years so fingers crossed it doesn't go too badly!

@E65Ross

Yes, those will do. DE blades all fit, yes.

I'm not a fan of the sampler packs, as I felt I was none the wiser when I tried one. Pick one type and try to stick with that for a few weeks. Derbys were ok for me. I only use Feathers, but you need good technique with them as they are pretty sharp.

Personally, I'd advise you to get a pack of something like Personnas to start with (sharp, but sensibly forgiving, and the choice of many) rather than try to use the Derbys supplied as they are not renowned as the sharpest, smoothest shave.

Have you got a link for those? Do they fit the DE89?

Cheers

Ross buy the razor you get some derbys with it (inconsistent and not that sharp) and pick either the Israelis or the Feathers and try those after a week or so of practice. Israelis are very sharp but caused me irritation, Feathers are my go too blades and really not that scary.

It is all personal preference, you need to try a bunch and see what you like.

I am yet to find anything as good as Personna Platinums, and I actually really dislike Feathers. Here are the ones I use:

I think you should buy this:

http://connaughtshaving.com/popular.html

I bought it when I first started and there are lots of blades in there for you to have a go with and make up your own mind. You get a full pack of each to plenty time to compare and practice smile

So 3 roads leading to Personnas then Ross smile

Trouble is with variety packs is that maybe 50% of the packs you'll only ever use one from!

All DE blades will (should!) fit all DE razors. They are universal.

Have you thought about buying a sampler pack of mixed blades to see what suits you best? Available on Ebay or Amazon in various combinations, you can then make your own informed choices. Buy a notebook to correlate the results, though or you will forget which blade was which!

My own shaving nirvana at the moment is:
Gillette Slim Adjustable
4 drops of baby oil rubbed in after a shower. Shave with the grain, turn razor around wet face (no more oil) and shave against the grain.
Rapira Platinum Lux blades. Two shaves, reverse the blade, one more shave then discard.

Marvellous!

Thank you so much chaps!

Tomorrow morning I shall buy the DE89 razor and then that mixed pack of 60 razors!

I used to despise shaving but recently having spent significantly more money on shaving foam and something to use afterwards my skin feels so much softer and free of any irritation, shaving had become a more pleasant experience.... Because of that I'd like to make it even more so! I'm not too worried about the odd cut here and there because, due to unfortunate circumstances I'm actually going to be off of work for a substantial length of time so I don't need to look my best..... But it's nice to feel your best still, isn't it!

When it all arrives I'll be sure to let you know how I get on!

Excuse my ignorance but what are the shaving brushes for?

Normally before shaving I just use a facial wash and then get straight to it with the foam!

Is this a necessity? Also... Someone posted up a shaving stick for use prior to shaving; again, is this needed?

Brush to help lift and coat the bristles of your beard to let the blade float over your skin. I would buy a good brush but not as my first purchase.

Stick as a preconditioner? Nope a hot wet towel on your face for a few minutes is a better solution although not essential.
