I usually shower before shaving anyway as I find that helps.

Thanks chaps.... I'm quite excited about getting all of this through now biggrin

At approx 10p per blade even if they are used just once then it's still probably cheaper than the more traditionally used razor blades that most people buy...

Either way, I'm just after a nicer shaving experience and hopefully this will help.

Trouble is.... Of I really like this and it gives better shave.

Is it really simple to change the blades over too?

Am I going to get hooked and want to buy a load more, more expensive razor blades? hehe

No doubt I'll try this, enjoy it, and start looking at a much more expensive Murkur one instead. In reality, what are the differences... I mean, how would you guys choose between the list of Murkur razors on the connaught shaving website? And do they all take the DE blades (like the personna platinum chrome)?

Sorry for so many questions! Total newbie to this. You guys have been really helpful!

So 3 roads leading to Personnas then Ross smile

Trouble is with variety packs is that maybe 50% of the packs you'll only ever use one from!
I also agree pick a middle-of-the-road blade like a Personna Platinum Chrome, stick with them for at least 30 or 40 shaves before trying a sampler pack.
Although it's impossible to generalise with blades, most people seem to like the following varieties:
Personna Platinum Chrome
Personna Lab Blue/Med Prep
Gillette 7 o'clock Super Platinum
Gillette Silver Blue
Polsilver Super Iridium
Feather Hi-Stainless
Astra Super Platinum

My Parker razor got shipped today, along with my shaving brush and the set of 60 blades!

I'm glad that the razor comes with the well recommended personna blades smile

Doubt it'll arrive tomorrow so maybe early next week... Look forward to it.

One website I found helpful when looking at razors was www.badgerandblade.com. There are some good reviews on the forum of various makes including Merkur and Mühle.

And don't forget to check out geo fatboy's channel on YouTube as he does some pretty good videos on shaving technique as well as reviews of razors (both safety and straight), shaving soaps/creams and blades.

Is it really simple to change the blades over too? yes, just be careful handling them

Am I going to get hooked and want to buy a load more, more expensive razor blades? hehe yes, and maybe. You'll definitely get a more expensive brush too - have a look at Shavemac, they're pretty good

As for shaving sticks, pick up a Palmolive one from Wilkinsons or Superdrug if you get a chance. They're less than a quid, last ages and give a good lather - If I'm using one I usually just rub the stick all over my stubble and then lather it up on my face using a brush. Really handy to pop in a wash bag if you're travelling.

Use a good soap or shaving cream and you'll never buy a crappy aerosol can of shave gel again.

That's brilliant mate, thanks for the link. I'll have a look at that! I realised that Parker razor doesn't come with the personna chrome platinum razors so glad I ordered some as they seem to be well recommended on here biggrin

Hi all

I last posted to this thread back in late 2012 when I made the switch to DE from the Gillette Mach 12 supercharger turbo GTi etc razors I had been using..

I used the £2 boots jobby up until Christmas with Wilko budget blades and wilkinson sword brush, along with a palmolive stick (as recommended to me on this thread), and never looked back. I was given an EJ DE89 for Christmas which I'm getting on nicely with, and have purchased a new badger brush and blade sampler pack to go with it (the free blades which came with the razor were utter ste) so I'll be trying out Feathers and Gillette 7 O'Clocks shortly...

I also purchased an Arko soap in a bowl, and herein lies the question - I'm not sure how I am supposed to use it? When I had the palmolive stick I used to wet my face, rub the stick all over, then lather up with the brush. With the arko soap bowl, I wet my face, wet the brush, and then swirled the brush around the soap and then applied to my face - is this the general idea? I'm not meant to be lathering it up in the lid, or anything other than what I'm doing? Just typing this I feel like a fool - but wanted to make sure I'm doing it right!

A second question - can anyone recommend a post shave balm for sensitive skin (reading back a few pages I saw comments that some don't believe sensitive skin exists.... it does!) - if it has a nice fragrance (coconut perhaps?) then all the better!

Thanks all

I use hard soap in a bowl....

Run your brush under the hot tap to get it hot and wet. Maybe give it one gentle flick if it's heavily loaded with water and then start to swirl around softly directly on the hard soap. Keep going until you have exactly the consistency of lather you want. Too little and the lather will be frothy and no good. Then put the lather on your face with the brush... swirling and lathering more as you do. Run the soap/bowl under the tap to remove the excess lather.

As a side note, I find the Arko soap to be a little quick to dry out on the face. This one - link below - I have found to be the absolute best.

But everyone has different experiences.

in the past I have used a Nivea sensitive aftershave cream which was fine:

http://www.healthmonthly.co.uk/nivea_for_men_post_...

and currently using a Prof Blightly unscented aftershave balm which is very good, just need to email him what you want and he is very accomodating;

Had a shave tonight in the end..... Definitely a closer shave and a nicer experience overall but.... I do need to practice! I cit myself in quite a few places hehe

I see what you mean about letting the weight of the lade do the work, you need almost no pressure at all to cut, which is really nice.

Did you say the blades last just one shave, or a couple? I used the personna ones as suggested.

Thanks guys

Nb - after using the elemis post shave recovery mask and then using some moisturiser my face feels as smooth as a baby's bum, and despite the cuts, I have no irritation at all.

Number of shaves per blade seems very personal, but Personnas seem fairly durable for most. They will tell you when they've had enough!

You should get anything from three to eight shaves from a blade, basically change it as soon as you feel any pulling, lack of smoothness or irritation and use that as a benchmark -1.

Cheers guys. Certainly seems that in the long run this will work out cheaper than shaving with a cartridge razor where the blades cost considerably more.

The razor I bought was around the £20 mark, there are several many times more expensive than this, what are the differences of the blades are the same?

Many thanks.

Yep it's cheaper my expenditure last year £15, 50 blades and a tub of cream. That said others on here may spend twenty times that on consumables.

Well the difference in yearly costs between a DE and a cartridge will be the blades. Consumables like creams etc would be the same.

I use quite expensive foaming gel and an aftershave "recovery mask" both made by Elemis and would thoroughly recommend. The aftershave recovery mask isn't like a traditional balm, you apply, leave it for 10-15mins and wipe off with a wet cloth. I then moisturise after that and with all of that I never suffer any irritation or redness.

Now I use the elemis stuff there's no chance I can ever go back to Nivea, Gillette etc for shaving foam/gel or aftershave balm.

Thanks for the recommendations everyone. I was reading The Shaving Room a bit earlier and Prof Blighty gets many recommendations there too - so I think I'll place an order smile

To be fair - I started with DE in November 2012 with a £4 brush, £2 DE razor, pack of £2 blades and a £1 palmolive stick.
Up until earlier this week all I had spent was £1 every couple of months on a stick, and £2 on blades a month. Compare that with multi blades and the associated shaving foams etc, I'd estimate I've saved £200 or so...
