Canned goo isn't meant for DE shaving. You can shave with it, but you're not really doing yourself any favours.
You're far better off just getting a cheap brush like a Wilkinson Sword synthetic & some Palmolive tube cream to start.

I've just bought a badger brush and sandalwood shave soap from Taylors. If I cut my face off fist time out I'll donate them to a worthy PHer in need of a shave.

Just have a nice long hot shower, take your time & remember... don't use any pressure!
I think a with the grain & across the grain 2-pass shave is probably the best way to start.
Some of the youtube videos are very good. This one's worth watching:

Thanks.

I watched that yesterday. Educational but his excessive eulogising about the razor started to grate. And three passes?

Two pass is enough for me. Unless you really want BBS.

3 passes with a DE89 is what I tend to do. It's not an aggressive razor & I only tend to shave every other day.

I tend to do one pass a day Monday to Friday. Should I be doing more than that?

I thinks it's a case of whatever works for you tbh. I do two passes - wtg and atg but miss out xtg.

One pass a way WTG works for me, I have never actually tried ATG.

Seems like asking for shaving rash?

Never a problem for me, but I do only use a feather twice. I accept I'll get the odd weeper for my shortcutting though!

Guess it is all personal preference, I never liked feathers! I found them very rough and they didn't give a smooth shave at all.

May give ATG a go tomorrow, will see how the Personnas do.

...and for me the Personnas do exactly as you say Feathers do for you. Very personal stuff this shaving!

Try TOBS, Trumper's, Doc Harris's or any proper shaving soap - even the humble Palmolive stick before you give up on a brush. When you get it right it's an unfeasibly slick shave. wink
Thanks for those links. Stupid question.... How do you form the lather from the soap and get it into the bowl? In some of those pics, in the 2nd link for example, it looks like the whole block of soap is in the bowl confused

Cheers

Swirl the brush in the soap a few times, and then swirl on face until you get a nice lather. Doesn't take long at all and no bowl needed! smile

Quite a crude description I know, but it works! I use soap exclusivity rather than cream now, the first time I used it I knew it was for me. As we said above, all personal preference!

If only to tell you how poor many of the blades they contain are. I wonder how many people are put off shaving by their starting with one of the horrors?

My father for one. Cut his face to ribbons with something Russian that he inexplicably chose first. He won't try a Feather or a Personna now.

That's a shame - it's why I think a Personna is just about the perfect starting place (even though they don't work for me)
