Along with some Derby blades. Are they a good or bad place to start? If bad, does Boots sell Personna?
Nice.

Is that a Kent brush?

It's a Taylors of Bond St one and made from badger, more than that I don't know.

Okay, I tried the new razor for the first time today. Nice and slowly, two passes.

No nicks on my face, but my neck had some red spots of blood (and still has). I used to have the same problem, same place, with Bic razors.

Any tips on avoiding this problem please?

You need to find out which directions your hair grows on your neck. The best way is to leave it to grow for a couple of days. You'll probably find it grows in several different directions under your jawline. What you want to do is just shave WTG on your neck until you've mastered this part of your shave, which to most of us is the hardest part of DE shaving.
I can get away with 1x WTG & 2x ATG passes under my jawline because I know in which direction my hair grows & I use the absolute bare minimum of pressure during the shave. Imagine just trying to remove the lather with the blade & not even really touching the skin.

Thanks, I will heed your advice.

The plan is to DE shave when I have time, multi-blade when time is limited. I can get away with a lot of sloppiness with a multi-blade, get an okay shave and keep my face intact.

Map the hair growth on your neck and go with a single pass with the grain for a while.

Do you guys also think you can get a closer shave with a DE than a cartridge razor? I swear I do.... But it could be a placebo, who knows!

I had a shave yesterday and even now there's only a little stubble.... As it was such a closer shave yesterday. Not sure I'll even bother tomorrow. But I have loaded it with a feather blade so I may give it a go as I don't need to be anywhere tomorrow so if I cut myself it doesn't matter hehe

I don't think I got a definite answer for the difference last between some of the DE razors? Some are around £20 yet others are getting on for 3 figures... What are the benefits?

Still tempted to plunge for some sandalwood soap and a bowl from Taylor of old bond Street...

Okay, as someone who until Friday was using a multi-blade - the DE shaves closer. The penalty thus far seems to be time and risk of nicks.

I've just bought the sandalwood soap and bowl from Taylor. The bowl is a beautiful figured hardwood. The soap smells, unsurprisingly, of sandalwood. But unless I am doing it wrong, the soap doesn't produce a very thick foam. Less than, for example, Gillette shave gel.

I'm no shaving guru having only limited experience of several genres (electric and straight razors) but as far as wet shaving goes I'm perfectly happy with the quality of shave a DE provides over that of a disposable or a cartridge type razor. Both these types however suit the disinterested who just wish to get the job done quickly and aren't concerned about the economics or benefits that an alternative may offer.

Do you get a better shave with a DE? Probably but this is because instead of taking thirty seconds to do a half arsed job you are now taking five minutes to do the same job but actually taking care to do it right.

What benefit a more expensive razor? Other than functionality (the ability to vary blade gap etc) your main difference is build quality, the materials, the balance, the plating, the screw mechanism, the size and the weight. You can get a perfectly acceptable functional razor from Wilkinson Sword for about £5 and I did (prior to reading this thread) however soon after deciding I liked shaving this way I wanted something heavier and made of shiny metal, I looked picked something budget end of a decent makers and bought that, finally I decided to go for a classic adjustable and that's where I am today. It's like when people ask why I drive a mercedes instead of a generic hatchback, I like the way the car makes me feel when I use it.

I use the Taylors Sandalwood and a badger brush. I only need a light dab of shaving cream on the brush to produce enough lather for 2, sometimes 3 passes. Make sure the brush is wet and spend longer irrigating the cream into a thick lather.

Is yours the soap in a bowl or a cream? Mine is hard soap and I am irrigating it with a wet brush swirled about on the surface. Wrong?

Nope. Sounds right.
Make sure brush isn't too wet, shake off excess water. It takes 30 seconds to one and a half minutes to get a decent lather according to temperature and water hardness. Keep going until it looks and feels right. You'll know.

Just used a feather blade....

Cut myself quite a bit hehe

Guess they must be a bit sharper than the personna platinum chrome blades?

Best to cut your teeth and hone your technique with the Personna before moving to Feathers. Give it a few months before making changes if you've recently started DE.

Thanks guys, my neck area is still tender. I think I'll leave shaving for a few days to let it calm down, and possibly even go back to a normal cartridge for my next shave to really let it recover a bit.... And put a personna back in my razor hehe

I'm still tempted by a pre-shave oil to use after a shower. Is it a case of apply it and leave it for 15mins and then apply your soap/cream/foam etc?

So what are your aftershave routines? I'm currently using Elemis post-shave recovery mask and, once removed after 15 mins, I use one of their body creams/moisturisers. I was given a sample of their SOS survival cream but at over £40 for a 50ml pot I'm not sure if I'll be going for it. It was bloody nice though so I may end up buying it once my current moisturiser has run out.

Over to you.
